Hi all ,finally got my rifle back from the gunsmith it’s a rem 700 22 Br 21 inch 1-12 twist shilen barrel, leupold vx-6 7-42 power variable scope ,getting great results with the 52 SMK Bullets ,my question is as a varmint rifle is it up to par even though it has a shorter barrel (21 inch) ,and how far can I hunt with it on ground hogs ? Thanks

Sounds like a great rifle,I would definitely try the 53 grain V-Max in your 12 twist. My 14 inch XP-100 does very well out to 400 yards and it’s only a 223;)

Nice ,I guess in my case the FPS is less with the 21 inch barrel thank you
My opinion is worth about nothing here but I'd venture to guess based off of what I think his bbl is and then the math stepping down to 21... you'd be in the 3450 ball park. With the BR case I'd imagine he's using somewhat slower powders to get that velocity and running a 27' bbl. Total guess on my part though. Perhaps 25-30fps per inch with that cartridge in .224cal... Here's a good link for the .223 which probably is running different powders: http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com...lts-in-223-rem-barrel-cut-down-velocity-test/

Thank you

I have a 12 and 14 twist 22 BR. The 12 tw gun shoots 60-64 gr bullets like a laser. Not as fast as 50-55 gr bullets in the 14 tw but the heavier bullet, although slower, bucks the wind and carries more energy at longer range. My best results have been with the faster powders.
