22 BR info

I have a Savage 12 Low Profile Single Shop in 204 that doesn't shoot as good as I would like. Thus, this gives me a great excuse to build another caliber as I have a Ruger 77 in 204 that shoots great. Am thinking of ordering the Shilen barrel in the 26" heavy sporter chambered in the 22 BR. Shilen has 2 neck sizes listed, a .244 and a .248. This is something I have never dealt with before so what do I order and what is the reason for the 2 different sizes. Thanks

Unless you are just committed to the 22 you should consider a no turn neck 6BR in 12 or 14 twist. Just stick some bullets in the new cases and go shooting.

Thanks for your replies. I really want to stick with the 22 BR. Hitting PD's with speeds approuching 3900 - 4000 with a 40 gr bullet is just exciting.

The 22br is a great choice with 40 gr Ballistic tips with their little bases on fire......
Seeing they don't have a .250 nk reamer go with the .248 and turn the necks to fit....
Also make sure you order the right twist rate for those bullets....

Whether .248 or .244, youll need to turn necks. Also you'll need to neck down first. Save yourself some bother and have more excitement.....get a 6BR with no-turn 271 neck.

I have both 22BR and 6BR and they're both terrific. They just want to be accurate and it's ridiculously easy to make either of them shoot well. But where the 22BR is a great cartridge, the 6BR is flat awesome. My 22BR,.243 neck) shoots 50's at 3850-4000 depending on powder/bullet, with literally one-hole accuracy. The 6BR shoots 55's and 58's at speeds only about 100fps slower, also with one-hole accuracy. Thing is, those 6mm bullets have a higher BC and going close to the same speed not only will they shoot a bit flatter, but that heavier bullet with bigger cross-section will hit make a bigger splat. I like both cartridges and don't plan on not having a 22BR, but the 6BR is superior. That cartridge really outdoes - and can take the place of- a 22-250.

That case has a long neck and you won't be shooting heavy bullets. Whichever chambering you choose, make sure the chamber has NO freebore. Not even a little.

For a 22BR 'no neck turn' chamber using the Lapua 6BR case, you want a .254 chamber neck. These work well with up to .025-.030 of freebore in a 1:14 twist. Make sure that whoever you get the barrel from uses a reamer for Lapua brass.

Based on some recent experiences....think Pac-Nor for a barrel. ;)
