22 ARC twist rate

Wanting to build 22 ARC bolt action rifle.
What is the optimum twist rate for the 62 EDL-VT bullets out of a 22 ARC bolt gun with a 22" barrel @3450FPS.

Wondering also. think a 1-9 would work with that bullet

My 9 and my 8 both shoot them fine. In case you ever want to shoot 70-80 gr bullets I d give an 8 twist serious consideration. If you re certain you ll never go heavier than 62-65 then a 9 twist will work fine. The 62 VT is nearly as long as a 75 Eldm just so you know.

It's bullet dependent. Yes, velocity is a small factor but not much of one. I think you'll need a 9 but won't see any down side to a 8 twist. Ask Hornady as well.

Guns and Gunsmithing; exactly. Velocity plays a role but it’s pretty minimal. Elevation (air density) has much more effect than velocity.

The 62 s did shoot well enough in my 9 twist Vanguard that I got 5-10 400-550 yard rockchucks back in May. Surprising how well they carry. The 3100 fps helps a lot too.

FWIW, I have no dog in the fight, but I will state that the Hornady box sticker says 1:8 on these 62 ELDVT

1-9 isn't worth messing with. I never understood the thinking behind manufacturers making 1-9 tw 223's, when a 1-8 makes the rifle more flexible/useable. Which is probably an argument for 1-7!

When there were no bullets heavier than 68/69's, the 9 twist was idea. As bullets got heavier and longer, the twist needed twisting a little more. You can hardly find a new 9 any more.

Thanks all! Contacted Hornady also and they recommend 1-8 twist also.

I pushed them hard in my 223AI 9 twist, horrible accuracy. Or slow for that matter. With 53gr VMAX nice tight groups in that barrel.

My ARC is 7.5 twist and shoots them very well.

I have some Berger 22 cal. 80 gr. VLD bullets. Will they be stable in an 8"twist when driven by a 22 BR. I am mainly a short range BR guy, so have no experience in this arena. What say you?

Just to clarify.
In an 8 twist, at 2900 fps, the bullet is 'marginally' stable. Berger says "You may shoot good groups under these conditions, but the BC of the bullet will not be optimized." and that the bullet will loose about 6% of it's ballistic coefficient.

I can only say I had good luck with a 9twist .223 (22" barrel). It shot 69 and 77 SMK's very well, even out at 600yd. 73 Bergers were even better. But, I am at 4500ft elevation.

When I bought my new barrel I went with a 7 twist for the 90gn bullets.

My 22arc is a 1-7 but I’d be just as comfortable with a 1-8 with the 80’s I shoot.
