22-6mm

I believe your right but it still is a speedster with bigger bullets. I can't remember how fast but it may have been over 6000. Matt

I love the round and with an 8 twist and 80 gr, SMK bullets I have shot a group just under 2 in. at 600 yards, off the hood of a jeep. Big draw back, I shot the throughout out in 800 rounds or less. Set the barrel back and rechamber and go again. Not bad if you do your own work.

I'm about to build a 2nd .22-243AI with two switch barrels for it. (pretty much the equivalent of a .22-6mm, but will run on a short action)
One barrel will be the same long throated 1:8 config for 75-80s that I already know to kick serious azz. The other, a shorter throated 1:12 for 60gr JLKs & maybe 60-64gr Bergers will be the new test subject. Will be interesting to see firsthand which one will perform better in the 3-500yds range. 75s-80s @ 35-3600, or ~60-64s @ 41-4200. Only one way to find out!

FWIW, my pard shoots a fresh .22-243Win & 75VLDs, and its beating my 1/2-3/4 smoked out .22-243AI & 75Amaxs in speed. Guess it might be time for a fresh 1:8 barrel for that one, too! Reckon I'll keep that old one on long enough to form some new cases, anyway.

With that in mind, I'd sooner recommend doing a straight .22-243Win again, over a Middie that requires fireforming & custom dies to load for it. If you're gonna hafta fireform, blow 'em out to a full 40°, enjoy the extra powder capacity & be done with it.

If you've got a long action & 6mm stuff already, the .22-6mm/.224TTH is a no brainer. Have it throated long for the heavies, grab some slow burning powder to dump en-mass & fill the case, and you should have a monster on your hands!

Whichever dragster ya pick, they all burn the rubber! So, enjoy 'em while they last...

It could just be the barrel. It could also be the throating. One thing I noticed with testing the Hornady bullets against the Bergers, that most times, I couldn't get the velocity with the Hornadys. Comparing same weights, but I did notice the Hornadys were fatter and had longer bearing surface. Both of those would get more pressure with less velocity. Matt

Absolutely, bullet style is surely a factor that tips the chrono in his direction.

Also, he's runnin' RL-22 in his vanilla version, and I'm runnin' H1000 in my AI, with a longer throat, to boot.

Wasn't making an apples to apples comparison. Moreso, making commentary on how a .22-243Win could very well hang with a more capacious .22-243AI in real life. With an associated pressure penalty, of course!

My barrel has lost at least 60fps in about 600rds, best I can tell. And the .22-243Win barrel he's running came off my other rifle with ~200rds (of 75Amaxs & 70TSXs) on it. Now that his load is settled upon, I've advised him to spare any plinking with it, and use it only on coyotes, LOL!!!

MRP in my 8 twist with 80.5 gr Bergers at an easy 3600. Will shoot a 3 shot grp. in the teens. Use the standard 6mm Rem necke down and trimmed. Bill

Hookem 74, I'm a Gonzales raised guy that enjoys living in the country. I sure would like to see a copy of the reloading for the 22-6mm. I'm in the process of trying the Gibbs effect as threading the primer pocket to accept a tube to start the powder from the front end. It really looks promising.

Todd,

After tons of looking, I am still unable to find the original article that we got when we purchased the rifle, but have narrowed it down to Shooting Times August 1984. Just found one on EBAY and ordered it!

Also, loaded up some 55 Gr Ballistics on top of 42.5 gr of 4064 last week.. going to shoot this weekend to see if the ol' girl will still shoot!

Let me know because I'm thinking those loads were hotter than a regular 22/6mm. I'd still like to know what the difference is in the reamer. Maybe an improved shoulder blowing it do reward causing less neck?? I'm not sure. Thanks, Hookum 74

Got the magazine in today..Circa August 1984. Turns out he built the first one on an old Remington 700 22-250, 1-14" twist barrel. Just re-chambered it. No major case adjustments, other than
turning necks to .0103, case has a 26 degree shoulder. Here are the loads he started with.

I have a 22-6mm A.I. built way back when by Harry McGowen still made barrels, it has a 1-14" twist and all I've shot is either the 50 grain Nolser Solid Base and 50 grain Bal. Tips, velocities run in the low 4200's and the thing still shoots 3/4" groups. ha I keep on thinking about rebarreling and believe I'd still go with a 14" twist or maybe 12" for 60 grain bullets. It is a hammer on yotes and I've used it to kill smaller Whitetail doe for camp meat.
