22-6mm

Acloco, wow!! What's barrel life like so far? How about accuracy & twist rate?

Barrel life? Don't know yet. Has close to 350 rounds down the tube now.

Barrel is a Shilen Select Match stainless with a 1:8 twist. At 36xx and that twist, PD's blow up...at 400 yards.

I am debating about cranking the speed back up though. I fire this rifle 100 rounds a year...so...even if the barrel lasts past 1000 rounds, there is 6 more years of shooting left. :)

I have a 22/6mm Remington, 30-inch Brux barrel rifle. It is a 1 in 10 twist, so I can't shoot anything longer than a 70-grain Berger VLD. My load is 47.5 grs of H4831SC, and it chronos at 3,644 FPS. BARREL LIFE IS SHORT. When the rifle had around 100 rounds through it, it would shoot high 3s, low 4s at 300 yards, stupendous. Now it has 300 or 400 rounds on it, and the throat is getting a good bit of fire cracking, as viewed with a Hawkeye bore scope. It's a fun gun, but it desperately needs to be a low volume gun. Long strings with this chambering will build excess heat and soon you will be popping primers. I'd say as a 10 to 20 shot per day groundhog rifle it would be wonderful, but if you get it out on the prairie dog pasture and try to shoot 100 to 200 shots a day, it will die a quick death. I will have to say that I am a benchrest shooter, and the accuracy of this rifle blew my mind. I use Winchester 6mm Remington brass and Federal 215 primers. Good luck.

Thanks guys gh's are the only item on this rifles menu, so life should hopefully be long! The reamer spec has zero free bore and is actually based of the 224 TTH. I ordered a Rock Creek barrel and it should be here in 3 weeks. 30" 1:8.5 to shoot 75-80 AMAX!

reimer,
don't let the naysayers stop you.
Go Ahead and build it and put them varmints in the dirt waaaaay out there!
It's Only a Barrel.
i shoot a 243AI rem700/kreiger/12twist 26", 55noslers around the 4K fps mark, It will Smokem!

On the Danzac/HBN coating theory....I personally chambered, threaded, crowned, and added the muzzle brake to a 32" Rock Creek barrel chambered in 338 RUM. With a fair amount of powder on board, this barrel slings 300 gr SMK's at 2950 fps (three different brands of chronographs have confirmed this velocity - and most of the common ballistic calculators are within 1 moa). Round count is just over 1K. Barrel was borescoped late last fall and may go another 500 to 1000 rounds. I don't have a guess.

I don't shoot any bullets out of my rifles unless they are coated with Danzac (will switch to HBN when I run out).

If I have not built and witnessed the accuracy of this barrel, I would not have posted this info.

I have personally watched the owner fan 15 rounds in less than a 5 minute period. To say this barrel has been abused, is an understatement.

The barrel/bullet/rifle will make anybody a believer at 1.5 miles. Better not be any power lines between point A and point B though. :)

As indicated earlier, run some nekkid bullets to break in a barrel and start to build loads with. After that, I would HIGHLY recommend going the HBN route. My next 22 caliber x something build will be following this route.

No worries my mind is set, I know I got to pay to play so im all in!
I certainly appreciate all the advice and since you can only lead a horse so far, this is where I choose to do my own thing.

Like a fast car or wild women, run em hard and enjoy it while it lasts! I know it will be fast and accurate out of the gate and with my short list of powder and bullet combos load development should be swift.

While I wait for the components to come in I am now searching for the 22-6mm equal in a 6.5 for whitetail-antelope-mule deer. The research is just half the fun! Whats your guys thoughts?

You are kidding....right?

I built a 6.5x55 AI specifically for that endeavor. I use Win, Rem, & Lapua brass. This is an easy 1200 yard accurate caliber with light to light/medium recoil with 140/142 gr bullets.

After several delays with the project I finally have it in my hands. It is a trued and bedded XR-100 with a rock creek 30" MTU. I tested RL-22 with 80AMAX from 47.5-48.0 and got velocities up to 3543. I need to work with loads but I think it will come around. I am searching for loads for RL-17 and H1000.

I burned out my first barrel at around 1,000 rounds and had it cut off and rechambered so it shooting good again. Mine would shoot a 2 in. group at 600 yrds. with a case full H-870, but that only got me abt 3200 fps. with an 80 gr. Sierra BT Match, which is an excellant coyote bullet if your not a hide saver. I have a new barrel readt ot go on it when this barrel gets shot out again, but my have it reamed out to 22-284 because I have a large supply of powder that is to slow for the 22-6mm and I can use more case capicity.

I re-chambered my father in law's 22-6mmAI after 800 rounds to a 22-250AI because the groups had started to open up. I have a 22-6mmAI reamer on order with PTG and as soon as it comes in I will be chambering a barrel I have with it. I am picking up formed brass from my FIL and I expect that I will be cutting the barrel back at around 800 rounds. I will be using moly'd 75 Amaxs since that is the only bullet I run in 22s.

Here's a couple targets from last week. I am trying to understand why the more jump the more or the velocities increase. Any ideas are welcome and encouraged!

a very good gunsmith in our area who builds lots of quality rifles decided to play with the 22/6mm, but holding nothing back on velocity, the rifle was a tack driver and flat as hell. he laughed when he said at 400 rnds the throat erosion started affecting groups and at 450 was spent. not a way to judge the 22/6mm barrel life but was kinda funny listening to him tell how he hot rodded a 80 gr berger to its limit.i wont even tell what velocity he said he cronographed, but it was smoking.
