22-6mm

Looking for information on the 22-6mm, I am planning on putting one together and was looking for information on barrel life and any other general guidance.
I plan to use this as a single shot to shoot 450-950yd groundhogs in PA. Planning to shoot 55vmax in a 1;14 until my bartlien 30" 1:8.5 comes in.

22-6mm (parent case is 6mm Remington) I realize barrel life will be limited but I am still figuring 1000-1300, which is no big deal. Just looking for first hand experience and input.
Pressure, brass life, ect.

FYI, look up the 22-6mm TTH(Texas Trouphy Hunter). Pretty much the same thing your looking at.

If you can get 800 rounds out of a 22/6mm your a lot luckier than I was... I toasted one in less than that shooting 80 SMK's.. Accurate as all get out but it sure didnt last very long...

I have a .224TTH with a 26" 1:8 twist barrel. I haven't had the chance to shoot it much, but so far I'm getting a little over 3500fps out of 75gr Amaxes over a stout load of RL22. I've read of, but don't know how other people are getting 3650+ out of theirs with the same powder, bullet, barrel length and twist.

My Grandpa had one and he called hornady and talked to a chap there who shoots them. If you do a search I may have posted his name in the past. I do not remember it now. My Grandpa said this guy was a big help in getting his to shoot.

Lonnie Hummel - He shoots the 22-6mm and shoots it a lot. Call Hornady and ask him. Adam

Go with the 22/6mm AI if you are building a rifle.

I am using H4831 with 75 gr AMax. You CAN run this bullet to 3950 fps in a 26" barrel, but I run mine at 3600-3650 to help keep the barrel life as long as possible. The 75 AMax at this speed are devestating on prairie dogs at long distances. At 400 yards, 25 foot verticle and 25 foot horizontal distance is the norm on full size dogs.

Just let the barrel stay as cool as possible.

Have not shot anything in two years. Company move and then another move back has put a significant crimp in my shooting.

Rifle has 600 rounds down the tube and throat is 4-5 thousandths deeper. So, would say that is doing good.

Wish I had a way to scientifically prove OR disprove shoulder angle and/or neck length determine amount of throat wear.

I plan to shoot moly'd bullets, in hopes of extended barrel life. I figure the first 100 rounds will be dedicated to load development and break in, after that maybe 150 rounds per year as a dedicated groundhog rifle. In about 4 weeks the Rock Creek barrel and reamer will be in. So some where around mid august i should have it up and running and if things come together i may try the groundhog shoot at south fork.

Have you tried Danzac/WS2 or boron nitride? A LOT less hassle than moly. Boron Nitride is probably the best way to go.

No I haven't. I just planned on buying the moly coated 75 AMAX, a standard offering from Hornady.

I'd like to hear more about the products you have mentioned. I know I have read several posts over the years disputing if coated bullets actually extend barrel life, I myself have not drawn any conclusions.

Pretty hard to break in a barrel with Moly'd bullets, better to use a plain bullet till it's broke it...

There was an article a few months ago in Precision Shooting magazine on the 22-6mm. The author quoted Mr.Hummell as saying the 22-6mm DID NOT seem to be a " barrel burner".If it's not too hard on barrels pushing the 75gr. A-max at 3400 -3500 fps as the article indicated, I could get pretty excited about building one.

I can run my 22/6mm AI at 3950 with the 75 AMax. I choose to run it at 3650, just to prolong the barrel life.

Mine is an AI version. The 40 degree shoulder may or may not help with throat erosion.
