hello all
just picked up three mausers
two .308
one 22-250ai
both .308s had bad head spacing
the only 22-250 gauges I have are standard, but the rifle closes on go and wan't close on a no-go
I had read that on ai the no-go should be the go
any info on checking head space
I believe the standard 22/250 go gauge should be the no go for the AI version. You want that .004" crush on standard brass so it will be held tight against the bolt face.
.004" may not be the exact number but you need that tight fit.

It is impossible to feel a 0.004" crush - and 0.004" will NOT hold the case in place for fire forming - that is why so many Ackley's need to have false shoulders made for fire forming... or they get head separations.
You'll be shooting brass, not a gauge. Brass varies from case to case. What you want is to feel resistance on the bolt handle - crush - with each piece of brass.
Over the years I have built probably a dozen 22-250AI's, you HAVE to set them up tight, as in the bolt should NOT close on a standard go gage! If it will you will go through brass like crazy, it will separate at the head. You can neck the brass up and then back down till you have a very tight fit, but it still best to get the headspace problem fixed. The barrel needs to be set back.
