22-250ai speed?

I have a idea rolling around in my little head and am curious what kind of speed are you guys getting with a 75-90 with a 26-28in barrel?

I had a "regular" 22-250 with a 1-8 twist, 27" barrel. I shot 75GR. Berger VLD's. They were traveling at 3275f.p.s. My guess you would get a "comfortable" 3400f.p.s. Here is something to ponder. My "fast-twist" 22-250 was very finicky to tune.. As a matter of fact, maddening is closer to the word I need to use! My gunsmith friend tried one one time (non-acklyized) and he had the same trouble>>>He warned me about the possibility. I actually ended up using 55gr B-tips with IMR 4007. That shot "better" but still only "so-so".. A fellow that shoots with me necked up a 22-250 to 6mm and shoots 105 -108 bullets. After many hundreds of rounds, he is giving up and going to a 6-6.5 x 47 OR a 6mmBR "improved version".. It seems to me that for whatever reason a 22-250 has a lot of difficulty with heavy for caliber bullets. I am quite sure there are some that shoot "lights-out" >>> just not me, nor the few people I know that have tried! Having said that, my son has a Savage "Long-Range Precision" (1-9 twist) (Factory Stock >> nothing done) and his shoots 73gr Bergers at 3300f.p.s. and it shoots in the upper .3's to mid .4's all day long at 200 yards! So I hope this convoluted message helps in some way!! LOL!!

22-250 AI 1/8 Criterion 26" on Savage repeater. Using Lapua brass, H4350 and 75 A Max it will run right at 3450 fps and has shot quite a few 1" 3 shot groups at 500 yds. I don't know how long it'll last but so far so good for me. Majority of fireform loads produced groups in the .25" range at 100yds.

I'm very happy with mine and will probably do it again.

Thats cool I have a Savage with a almost wore out 6br barrel. Now I have a bat in a 6br so don't need another. So I was thinking of some odd caliber to shoot in 600br matches when we aren't having soy points.

fatory savage 24" stainless varmint...1:9 was a 223 and rechambered to 22-250AI. was getting 3350fps with H4350 and 75 Amax. reached 3375 but accuracy was at 3350 fps. sad thing was my 60gr. vmax varget fireform loads were out shooting my ackley loads.

MY experiance- 22-250AI- Keiger 5R 9 twist, 75 v-max or berger 75 gr, win brass, rem 9 1/2, RL 17-42gr. 3750 fps with no "over pressure signs" YMMV

thats either a typo of 3750fps or thats a flat out lie

Naw...

He just pulls the trigger harder than you.

I have 28" PacNor SuperMatch 1:8 twist 22-250 AI for my savage. I could get over 3600 fps with the 69SMK using iMR4007SSC. I could get a little more speed with IMR 4831 but sticky bolt and loose pockets soon followed with Win brass. I have pushed the 80 VLD and AMax to 3550 but the wrecked the brass in 2-3 firings. It was too much. 3400 was my happy number with the 80s. A could get more speed with the 75s but they didn't shot good. I need to try again with that barrel now that Lapua brass is available.

I can't image how you got 3750 fps with an 80.... I guess some barrels are faster than others.

Luck, Tim

he didn't say how long his barrel is. Maybe he has a 40" barrel. ;)

Have two 22-250AI's both 8 twist one 26" barrel (Pacnor) and one 28" (LW) same load with 75gr Amax gets me 3300 and 3375.
I have had them up to 3450 but accuracy is at 3300 in mine

I would say it is time to replace the Chrony, i have a 22 250 AI 8 Twist, and a 22 250 8 twist, Aint no way either are 3750 with 75 grs., not even close.

So is the accuracy good?

Accuracy is very good using Norma in the 28" barrel and Lapua brass in the 26" with H4831sc and Fed 210GM

The low shot was me 28" Lothar Walther barrel on a Savage LRPV

The center is 5 shots the top and bottom are 1 click up and 1 click down at 100yrds
26" Pacnor SM on a Stiller Preadtor

You won't be sorry RL22 4350 both gave me more velocity but 4831sc just shot a little better

Just for comparison I built a 22/244 Imp with a Bartlein 8.5tw cut @ 24". Shooting the 70gr Berger with 53.5gr of H4831SC it ran 3746fps with an SD of 17 over my Oehler 35P. That is pretty much max for H4831SC in my rig. Groups opened to about .8". I backed off to 52.9gr with an SD of 11 and velocity of 3661 as it shot around .6". Didn't try much fiddling as I wanted to use it for unranged yotes and quick shots out to 400ish and every test shot is another scoop of dirt from the grave for my expensive Bartlein. Figured lighter bullet etc would make it easier to spot misses over my XC. However that bellering bucking SOB tain't gonna fit the bill. My lil brain didn't figure in that 12+ more grains of fuel and a lighter barrel overroad my 'less recoil' theory.lol Now that is pretty much the limit I have found so running a heavier bullet in a smaller case I just don't see 3750fps??? However, anything is possible, especially with the internet!!!! lol

Bought a pd of RL22 to see if it would be faster but haven't tested it yet. I see about fitty cents(not the rapper) float up from my barrel to the heavens every time I pull the trigger on a piece of paper.
