22-250AI Questions

Anyone have any experience with a fast twist 22-250AI. Should I go with 7 or 8 twist ? I know the 90 grainers need a 7 twist in a .223 but do I really need that much twist in 22-250AI.

I have a 1:8 22-250 AI 28" PacNor. Loves the 75 Amax and 80 SMK. Shoots the 69 SMK very well. It will not stabilize the 90 VLDs. Walt told me it wouldn't but I had to try it myself so he sent me a dozen. I am learning to expect the wisdom of someone with the experience of Walt Berger. Luck, Tim

Just finished a .22-250 AI build with a Pac-Nor 1:9" twist designed exclusively for the 50 grain Barnes Varmint Grenade. Previously I had a Remington 40X barreled with a Pac-Nor 1:10" twist for the same bullet in .22-250 standard. So far they both shoot this long but light bullet extremely well, with the 1:9" Ackley handling slower powders more efficiently, especially H-380. One way to determine the twist rate needed for any given bullet is to measure the length of whichever bullet is heaviest or longest (length counts for more than weight in non-lead core bullets) and plug the data into the twist calculator at: http://www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmstab-5.1.cgi

If you are contemplating shooting a 90 grain bullet, I would suggest looking at a 6mm/.243 cartridge instead. In my case I couldn't arrive at the velocity and stability for the 62 grain 6mm Barnes Varmint Grenade, or several others including Nosler and Hornady lead core bullets, until I tried a 6mm 1:8" twist barrel chambered for the .243 WSSM. The smaller case of the 6mm PPC was inadequate with a 1:10" twist. With sufficient powder capacity and twist rate the .243 WSSM combination is a .2" to .3" varmint disruptor. The 6XC may be a another good choice with 1:7.5" or 1:7" twist.

Generally I tend to err on the side of the faster twist these days.

Go with an 8 twist and set it up for 75-80 grain class bullets. My sons 22-250AI Savage with a prefit McGowen barrel is deadly with the 80 grain Sierra MK's. He has shot it in a few local matches but barrel heat can get up there. An outstanding cartridge! His rifle will be used for woodchucks this coming spring/summer with 75 A-Max's.

Yah, 1:7's about as slow as will work with Berger's 90. Service rifle shooters using 'em go with 1:6.5 in their 20" barrels.

Mine's an eight twist. I had no desire to go bigger than an 80, and in fact, have only shot 75's. The A-Maxes shot good, but the VLD's are outstanding.

I think they're the best compromise of BC and velocity for my use, which is strictly for coyotes. Of course, not discounting deer in the near future, with having a couple of boxes of Sciroccos waiting in the wings.......

Have a 40X action with Broughton 8 twist bbl. During testing it shot everything well from 70 to 80 gr. Settled on Berger 77 gr. and have had great success.

not see'n alot of velocities posted , what is to be expected on average for 80's in a 22-250 improved case?

I have a Krieger 8 twist that is 28 inches long. I shoot 82 gr Bergers at 3200 fps using 39.0 of 4831sc .Bullets are 10 thousandths in the lands. Mine takes 26.6 min to get to 1000yd but the wind is a challenge.I think it is a great caliber.
