I've read all your posts and you're overthinking this. A 12 twist will work just fine. I can't tell you about which factory ammo to shoot because I've never used it. Factory loads won't all shoot the same in your barrel, so you will need to find what's most accurate. A 12 twist is fine for anything you're planning to shoot.......Hi all, I am new to this site,I’ve been reading many, many posts about the 22-250, I am considering buy a Savave model 12 low profile varmiter with a 12 twist. I DO NOT reload and don’t really intend to. My ? is will this gun be a good choice for shooting factory ammo in 50gr. , 55gr., 53gr.(if I can find it) and maybe 60gr. as these bullet weights seem to be readily available in my area. I want the 22-250 because it’s a fast, flat shooter, probably won’t be shooting more than 300yds. But you never know. Coyotes, woodchucks and other undesirables will be my main focus. Thanks.
For your purposes, I'd say go with 50gr bullets for the velocity. Don't worry about barrel wear. With the Savage if you ever do wear one out it's easy to replace. . You want to just point and shoot, that weight bullet at the probable velocity.......zero at 50 yds and it'll be very slightly high at 200. At 300 you're about 4" high**( EDIT-I meant to say a BIT more than 4" LOW, easy to correct) and still on fur. A scope that goes to 16x will be fine. But nothing wrong with optical horsepower. A well priced scope I've found is the 4-20 Athlon Heras, I have some on varmint guns and like them.My 22-250s have been Ackley Improved since about 1990. Except for this one, the only std. 22-250 I have.......a sporter weight Savage from the pawnshop. It's nicely accurate with handloads and 50's - sorry no factory ammo. This is probably a bit faster than factory ammo but I don't shoot that stuff and am just guessing. First goup was at 75yds, next day same load shot at 100. Target squares are 1". Would do just fine for your purposes.....aim and shoot.
