22-250 with 90 gr bullets for LR
Wow, where did you find Varget?? ;D

What gun? Did you go with 1:7 specifically for 90's?
Its a Criterion Savage prefit barrel. IMO, Criterion's 223AI reamer (0.061" freebore) is a bit short for 90s but I'm happy with the velocity from a 22" barrel and it lines up pretty well with QL estimates.

The barrel life should not be appreciably different than with lighter bullets being run with the same pressures.

It might be a bit less because the slower bullet will cause the high temperature / high velocity gas to remain in contact with the bore a little longer.

Having acknowledged that, if you are using a Savage or other switch-barrel, swapping out old barrels for new is straightforward. The cost of a replacement barrel might be worth learning how long it will last!

That's the way it works alright .... but the barrel life is reduced appreciably by heavy bullets when you're talking about over-bore capacity cartridges which .22-250 Rem is. It's not just the extra bullet mass induced inertia, but that you'll be using an appreciably slower burning powder with a 90 than with a 40 to 55 as used by .22-250 in most factory sporter rifles.

You have a good Varmint rifle.

I never understood the "hard to get them tuned in" stuff when dealing with the 90's. I own a 223 bolt, 30" 6 1/2 twist. My OAL is 2.550 and with R-15 I'm getting 2875 with less than 1 inch groups at 200 yds all day long with very little if any "tuning"

IN my XTC space gun, I was using TAC at the short lines and then R-15 at 600 but thought it'd be best to find a load with the 90's and TAC if possible. Didn't want to mix powders shooting XTC if possible. I literally threw together some test loads starting at 22g and working to 24g of TAC and went shot today. 22g showed promise, 22.5 to 23.5 was a bit loose then at 24g, I shot a .803 inch group at 200 yds (5 shots) at 2765 FPS with very little attention to detail.....LC brass, rem 7 1/2 primers, standard brass prep. Gun is a 26", 7 twist Krieger barrel.

I jump the 90's in both guns about 30 thou. Frankly, I haven't found a gun with a barrel over 26" and at least a 7 twist that WON'T shoot the 90's well. I will say, I think you need an OAL of at least 2.500. Any less and the bullet is too far in the case and that's where problems start to happen. My friends bone stock savage shot 90's very well and had the "normal" savage chambering. His OAL measured 2.510.

I'd stay with a 223. More speed will not buy you anything at 600 and just a bit at 1000. 2850-2900 FPS is fine.

I know this is a old thread but... I shoot a 250 with 90smk. 3050fps with imr4350 bug holes at 100yd . 25inch 1:7 cbi barrel
Just read all the above from this 2014 thread and happy to hear some guys getting a 90 vld to run in and 8 twist barrel with the 22-250 Ackley.

Tried 90gr VLD in a Brux 1-8" .22-250. Would not shoot. Maybe the .22-250ai will work with 1-8" twist. If I built another it would be 1-7"...even if it were the ackley.

I'm hearing that side as well. Just reading the three year old thread and it's giving me a little hope. I built this gun for 80s but figured on trying the 90s for giggles. I'm out nothing if it doesn't pan out.

I think I need a 22-250 ai 7.5 twist. I keep trying to talk myself out of it because I dont need it, but I want to tune one up and see how it does.

I have both the regular and ai at jgs getting re sharpened thanks to a set back job. I have done a few for a couple local guys that have about every caliber under the sun and they rave about these with 75 grain eldm bullets. They mainly shoot steel out to 1200.

Had a .22-250 8 twist...did well with the 80's. I'll do another again one day but will go with a 7 twist for 90gr.

For 600-1000 yard target, I think a 90gr vld with a g1 bc of .551, leaving a 22-250 at 2900 fps, will out perform a 185 vld with bc of .549 from a 308 at 2600 fps. How hard would that load be on the barrel? Would 28" be about optimum barrel length? With bullets seated around the base of the neck, would I likely need a long action?

The lack of recoil and ease of shooting with the 22-250 with heavy bullets, will make this one of your favorite rounds.

I use 77gr Lapua Scenars at 3330 fps with a SD under 10 in a 30" 7x Broughton - Short Action (bullet is loaded maybe .100 into the neck, so those rounds are looong).

I tried 90s, 80s (Berger and Sierra) then settled on the Scenars.

90 Berger vld @ 2900 - 1k in 27.75 and 1.16 moa for wind
77 Lapua Scenar L @ 3300 - 26.05 and 1.57 moa for wind

The first point someone with argue is the .40+ moa difference in windage and I accept that - but if you shoot enough of the Bergers and Sierras you will have more elevation variance then the Scenars. My argument is this - I will choose consistency over .4 moa in wind any day, you'll get at least an moa difference in elevation from the Bergers and Sierras. Measure and weigh 1000 of each bullet, sort into groups then shoot. You'll buy Lapua every time if you don't make your own or can't afford custom prices.

BC is awesome, the more the better .... but if you are trying to put 4 rounds or more next to the the first one, consistency is king.

Now I have never shot any of the heavy 22cals, but I have read on here that if the 90s work they are great but they are also a pain in the butt to tune. I think most guys shoot 80s. I have the same idea as you but I'm gonna be using a 22 Dasher.
