22-250 with 64 TGK's

Looking at building a 22-250 or possibly 22-250 Ackley to shoot these. If I can push close to 3600 with a standard 22-250 24" then I personally will be fine with it. Just looking to see if there is any experience with these components.

1-8 24"

3600fps with a standard 24"is going to be hot, were running 65gr JLK's around 3300fps out a 24" barrel with N540 and I doubt there is very much left especially with that powder but they are scary accurate

You will definitely need that 8 twist barrel, I tried them in my Swift with a 12 twist and they didn’t stabilize. I’m thinking you’ll need the the 22-250 AI to get the velocity that you’re after. I’m going to try them in my 8 twist 22-250 but my Tikka only has the 22” barrel.

Can the Proof. I lost my mind for 5 mins. Haha. 1-10 Kreiger or Brux is what it’ll be. Most likely AI.

Curiosity makes me want to ask:

What is your reasoning for choosing the 3,600 fps velocity?

Why 24"?

I'm running these in a standard .22-250 but using a 26" barrel. My accuracy load is 3,500 fps with reasonable pressure. I use Pressure Trace so I'm not just guessing. 1:9"

But in my .22-250 AI I get to and surpass 3,600 fps. using another 26" barrel. 1:9

When my data is run through the Berger Stability software, it suggests a 1:9" twist rate. The 1:10" loses about 30 BC points.

No need to increase the RPMs by going with a 1:8" twist.

Enjoy!

:)

3600 isn't an exact number, more of an area.

At the time, I was considering a Proof for some reason. I do use suppressors, but I'm not afraid of length.

What bullet are you using?

I will probably go AI.

The 1-8 also went back to the Proof idea. It's 1-12 or 1-8. But things have changed since the OP lol.

I had found a few variations of the TGKs which I wanted to test and the 64 gr. were on the top of that list. I carry a .22-250 for deer hunting on occasion...

You can run these bullets casually in the 1:9" twist without stressing the jacket in your range of 3,400 - 3,600.

Enjoy!

Just curious, Are the 64 TGK considered a varmint or deer bullet? I haven’t shot anything with them yet, but I did use the 65 grain spbt game kings on ground hogs and they seemed to be a tough bullet.

They seem like they have a thicker jacket than a traditional varmint bullet, but they destroy coyotes when pushed, from what I’ve seen.
