22-250 reloading brass failure

Look at these three 22-250 cartridges with 55 grain Berger bullets run through my Rcbs die. The neck is rolled or puffy looking. I am experimenting to find my ogive. Is this me or a die problem? The one on the far right looks a little better.

Screw the die down until it touches the shoulder ( before you seat a bullet ) and once it touches the shoulder screw it back up 1 to 1 1/2 turns so it does not touch the shoulder. Set seater stem to your desired seating depth and seat bullet. If you want to crimp ( don’t know why you would ) screw seating stem back out several turns and screw die down until it touches shoulder and carefully turn die down until you achieve your desired crimp. Then run seating stem back down to desired seating depth. Always make sure your rounds will cycle through your rifle before you load too many.
Edit. You have way too much crimp on those… also looks like you have also over chamfered the outside of the case.

I assume it's not a crimping die. No reason to crimp. Are the dies free from case lube buildup? Are you lubing the case necks for sizing. Lube the case body and neck with a light coat of petroleum oil and try sizing. Once I wrinkled a shoulder, it was caused by recoating my lube pad with too much lube and lube building up in the top of the die.

You have the die set up so it's crimping the bullet before its fully seated. Therefore its pushing the shoulder back.
Look closely at the picture...extreme crimp nearly digging into bullet. Back that die out and adjust seating depths with the seating stem only. As said above, there is no reason to crimp bullets for a 22/250.
I adjust such dies by running a sized case into the die while it is at least two or more full turns from contacting the shellholder. With the case full into the die, screw the die down until the die touches the case mouth (you will feel it). Now back the die out at least 1/2 turn or more. Lock it in place. With the seating stem backed out a good distance try seating a bullet. It will not be seated deeply enough, so lower the ram. Now gradually turn the stem in and raise the ram in steps - repeat until you have seated the bullet to the depth you want it. Lock the stem down and you are ready to load.

The above instructions should have you on track in no time. If they are current production dies with no instructions you should be able to down load them from the mfg web site. Then you'll have them to refer to as well.

You also state that you are “ Experimenting “ to find the Ogive… Seating the way you are is NOT the way to find the Ogive. One of the best methods in my experience is Alex Wheeler’s method of finding the lands. You will be able to find the Ogive very easily and arrive at the same number with his method. There are many other ways but in my opinion his way works consistently for me. Here is the link to Alex’s site and there are some great videos on his site which will be of great help to you.

Thanks, I am seeing daylight with this. I’ve adjusted the die and the first round (case), looks good.
Glad to hear it. I wish seating dies for 99% of cartridges didn't have the crimping option. It gets too many new people into trouble and is absolutely unnecessary in the majority of cartridges. Making it even worse, crimping requires all cases to be trimmed to the exact same length to be effective and not affect accuracy. One more thing a loader shouldn't have to worry about!

I’ve looked at the method. The question is can I keep the bullet falling out of the case before I can close the bolt. I might seat it just enough to get it started, then try Wheelers method. I like the idea of it though.

First with RCBS seating die, you put a case (no bullet)in the rcbs number 3 shell holder(22-250) installed on the press ram. Raise it all the way. Install the seating die, turning it in until it makes contact with the case MOUTH. Stop , turn the die out( back counterclockwise) ONE full turn. From this point on you will only adjust the seating stem as you test chamber the DUMMY rd.
