22-250 rebarreling

have a 22-250 that needs re-barreling. What to try another caliber. What are some good calibers that would work with the 22-250 action and bolt.
Considering 6mm international. shooting out to 600 yards.

The 6BR has it all over the International for the use that you mentioned. The next step up, possibly the top, for 600 is the Dasher.

If it were me, I would go with the 6BR....or, maybe the .20BR? Either one uses the large case, which will fit your .22-250 action. The final choice kind of depends on what you are going to use the caliber for. Unless you are shooting hot and heavy and use a lot of brass, I always want to consider the possibility of purchasing some really good brass (i.e., Lapua or Norma) before I make a final choice on caliber/cartridge. For instance, if you are shooting coyotes, where you don't really make a lot of shots in any given season, you might consider spending more for 100 really good cases and plan on reusing them. The members here will pounce on me if I am off base.

by fall i'll be where you are..w/ a 22-250 that needs rebarreling..after fooling w/ a 6ppc..i know that i dodn't want to make brass..i have a 6br( replaced the 6 ppc )..so instead of a 1 in 12 tw 22-250, i,m going w/ a 1 in 9 tw 22-250..to shoot bigger bullets ..i already have the dies and brass..and like the caliber..a new brux 1 in 9 for the savage lrpv & hope it shoots as good as what i have now

In that case, go with something with a little less recoil and slower barrel-heating rate. I love my Remington 40XBBR .222 (more accurate than my .223), but they are small-case calibers. But...I forgot....we have to stick with the large case stuff. I would go with a .22BR or 6mmBR still...They don't suck up a huge amount of powder, brass is readily available, they both feature large cases and are very accurate. Also, you don't have to reform brass....at least with the 6mmBR. I don't know about the .22. Both calibers are quite accurate....If I had to rebarrel my .22-250, I would have a difficult choice here, but I would probably lean toward the 6mm. Was a bench rest favorite for years, is easy on the barrel, and IIRC, brass is easy to come by. Plus, you don't need to reform the brass. Nice caliber.

When you have the chamber reamed, consider having the gunsmith cut a short chamber to allow the bullet to seat a bit further into the case than it would with the ordinarily stock case. IIRC, The 6BR bullets stick out quite a bit, and if you shoot as much as you say you will, you don't want any erosion to cause you to keep seating the bullet out further and further every time you reload each couple of hundred rounds to the point where you can't keep the bullet seated into the case. Make sure you discuss this with your gunsmith. While you are at it, ask him about squaring up the bolt face and lugs, etc. You might as well get everything straight while you are at it. You will need accuracy if you are going to shoot things as small as ground squirrels and crows.

out to 600 yards i say a 6br improved like a brx or dasher with a 8 twist barrel. then you know you have enough horsepower and twist to get the job done.

For the types of shooting you're doing and the high annual round count, I'd recommend the 6.5X47 Lapua. Factory brass that's pricey but good and long-lived, better barrel life than the present .22-250 and 6BR, fits in and feeds from your .22-250 magazine, and a good choice of bullet weights and types. It's man enough for small to medium size deer too.

Alternatives would be .260 Rem or 6.5 Hornady Creedmoor burning a bit more powder, or of course the 6BR always worth considering as a general purpose varmint and target round. You don't say though if you want / need magazine feed. The BR is not a great magazine rifle cartridge, while 6.5X47L is designed for this.

An 'obvious' choice might be something based on the .22-250 Rem case, 6XC being the primary candidate, but there could be an element of case forming involved unless you find some of the rather expensive Norma 6XC brass. Dies are available but generally are more expensive match types, although Forster lists its standard 'Benchrest' FL sets for the cartridge.
