22-250 Powder

If you could only choose one powder for a 22-250 what would it be, and also what charge. I have been using H380 and I am wanting to try a different powder like H4895, but local gun shop does not have any. I will be shooting 53gr. SMK at 100 yards.

thanks robert

i've had great results with IMR 4064 with 52-55 gr bullets. also, varget is quite good but is difficult to find right now.

i'd have to go back through my notes for the 4064 load... can't remember off the top of my head.

I have had some luck with ww748 with 50 grain remmy plhp's.My 788 remington shot under a half inch with this powder.

My 1-12 Savage really likes Varget pushing a 55gr Sierra 1365. I have a bunch of test loads with Nosler Custom Competition 52gr hollow points and 4064 loaded but haven't had a chance to try them.

I can get IMR 4064 like every body else Varget I can't find. I also thought about IMR 3031, but I can't find it either.

If you have any H414 or WW760 you might try that.
I burned up a couple of barrels with H414 ; had very good results with it.

H380-
This was an unnamed spherical rifle propellant when the late Bruce Hodgdon first used it. When a 38.0 grain charge behind a 52 grain bullet gave one hole groups from his 22 caliber wildcat (now called the 22-250), he appropriately named the powder H380.

This came directly from the Hodgdon website about H380.

I would be hard pressed to steer away from H380. 38 grains with the 55 Nosler BT shoots little bitty holes from my factory Rem 700 VS. And is devestating on a coyote from any distance I can see it.

I've also used 33.5 grs of Benchmark with the 55 Noslers. But, I keep going back to H380...

With bullets ranging from 55 to 73grs (depending on your twist on the heavier ones) >>> IMR 4007 has proved, for me, to be the most consistently accurate with the highest velocities! AWESOME powder for this caliber!

+1 on H4895. Shoots lights out with 40-55 grain bullets. 35.5 grains with a 55 has hit the sweet spot for me in a couple of rifles.

My 22-250 would only shoot IMR 3031 with satisfactory accuracy. Varget, H4895 and even H380 were marginally accurate at best. I don't like how big the kernels are with 3031, and tried to tell my rifle that it was suppose to shoot 4895 and 380 the best, but it ignored me.

Shot 22-250's for many years....have a 200 yard target 4 under a dime and 5 under a nickel....VVN150 and Sierra 1365's
