22-250 loads. Where to start?

I just purchased a new to me 22-250 1-9 twist barrel. I was hoping to get a little advise on where to starton loading for it? I have some once fired brass but mostly new unfired brass. I am using redding deluxe die set so i have both full length as well as neck dies.

What shoulda start with as far as case prep and loads?

Thank you

Ribol,
What I suggest you do, is figure out the load that you will use to "fireform" the new brass. Then once you have fired the NEW brass, measure your shoulders OR resize the new brass to where it is the easiest (least resistance) to close your bolt. Then whatever die setting you used to resize the NEW just fired brass, THEN take the once fired brass and resize that to the same setting so all your brass will all be resized to the same settings. Hopefully I've not confused you, but once fired brass in another rifle, may not allow you to just load it as the bolt as it may not close because of shoulder movement on the brass fired in another rifle. Also don't know if you have a loading manual with recommendations for bullets and the powders to use, but I'd go mid-range in terms of load for fireforming new brass. Hope that helps. Hollar if I've confused you too much.

70 grn berger 5 thou in to the lands and 33.1 grn of varget. should get you 3250-3300 fps with that slug. it will be very good out to 700 yds.

Congratulations of acquiring a really fine caliber.

The 9" twist should lend itself to the heavier bullets so I'd start with the 55-60 grain weight class of bullets. Sierra or Hornady is a good place to start.

Excellent powders for the 22 250 are; H380, Varget, IMR 4895, IMR 4064. I'd start with Varget although any of the aforementioned powders should work quite well.

Primers - I'd start with Federal 210 match. For H380 powder however I'd try the CCI magnum primer.

Cases - I would start with new cases rather than cases fired from unknown rifles. Follow normal case prep procedures - make sure you deburr the flash hole also.

I found in my rifle that seating depth can make a large difference in group size. I'd start .20 to .30 thousand off the lands and work back.

I've also discovered that with my rifle, the middle range loads shoot more accurately - no need to push the pressure envelope.

Sizing case is critically important in any rifle cartridge and especially with this cartridge since the case is tapered and tends to stretch more readily. To size properly, you need some means of measuring shoulder bump. Suggest you read the article entitled "Basics - Resizing - Case Dimensions" on the riflemansjournal.blogspot.com written by German Salazar; it explains everything you need to know about it.

Good luck and good shooting - I think you'll love this cartridge; one of the best for the low volume varmint / predator hunter. Many of ghogs have fallen to mine over the years.

Isn't that a pretty hot load to start someone off at? I would not start with this but start lower and work your way up. We don't even know what kind of action the OP is using or his ability to read pressure signs. I didn't run this in QL for the Berger but both Nosler and Sierra show this above max load for a 69gr bullet. Just sayin.

Agreed! Hell, the max load of Varget for a 55gr., per Hodgdon, is 36.5 gr. and at 36 I was experiencing high pressure! Flattening primers and loose primer pockets in RP brass using WLR primers! Good call!

Thank you for the replies.
The action is a savage action
I have most of those powders but I don't have bullets yet. So I will order a couple of different ones. Hopefully they are not as sold out as so much other things.

Best of luck on your search. If you don't find what you are wanting, post a WTB (Want To Buy) note in the reloading components marketplace area and someone may have what you are looking for.
