22-250 Imp 28*

Hi folks,

I'm in the early stages of a 20cal wildcat...not sure what exactly i'm going to do at this point but I'm in need of some info.

Do any of you have or know where to find a reamer print or something similar for the 22-250 Improved 28*? I'm trying to figure out how much/if any change in body taper there is compared to the parent case.

Thank in advance!!!

Trsp -

Howdy !

.22-250 case has a 28* shoulder, stock.

How much shoulder angle do you want on your wildcat ?

The standard 22-250 case has quite a bit of body taper. When blown out to improved it's a lot straighter whether the shoulder is 28 or 40* and it holds several gr. more powder. There's already such thing as a 20-250. The standard case holds enough powder to push a 30gr/20cal bullet as fast as you'd ever want to make it go.

At this point, I'm not real sure! A little background - to date, I've built a Savage based custom rifle for each of my children. My 5 year old girl has a 223 AI, my 3 year old son has a 20 BR and now I'm looking into a new project for my baby girl that is due mid to late March. I'm kinda wanting to make this one special and all my/her own.

I know I want to use the 22-250 case. Mr. Kiff was kind enough to send me a couple reamer prints for a 20-250 and 20-250 AI so I've been staring at them. Simple neck down is kinda boring and the AI 40* version tends to have feeding/extraction issues at times although I love the lack of case stretch. Barrel life is not really a consideration as it will be a coyote rifle that will only see a handfull of rounds per year, once the kids are old enough obviously!).

I'd really like to use a 30* shoulder with less body taper than parent 22-250 case but that may require some serious cash towards reamers and custom dies. If I could figure out some dimensions that would allow me to use existing or slightly modified dies, that would be the route I'd take.

I'm terrible with geometry and the like so that's not helping anything!

Ackman,

I currently have 4 Ackley Improved barrels so I'm familiar with those. Do the 28 and 40 degree improved cases,22-250) share the same dimensions except for the shoulder angle? If the only diff. is the shoulder angle, I'd be inclined to go full 40 degree or save my pennies and opt for something custom and 30*.

Thanks to both of you for your responses!!!

trappst, I gotta say--I really admire a guy like you. You really love your children. Make SURE you develope loads, and adequately field test those rifles so your wife can know without a doubt that they are safe for her children. I wish my dad was more like you---instead I build him rifles. Your kid can tell all of her classmates that her varmint rifle will smoke anything they have!!!! My gunsmith and I have been worried about my 1 year old son---he seems to be a southpaw and all of my actions are rt. handed. Guess I'll have to start watching the gun auctions for something to build him one on. I really got tickeled when I read your post---If everyone had that much enthusiasm about their kids having a good rifle, the U.S. would be a better place, with more shooters--I'm glad they'll have good rifles, instead of the junk most people get their kids

Hey Okie. I am a south paw and every gun around me was right handed, and I was right eye dominant. I can shoot just slightly better right handed as left. Just saying. I don't know if I would have been better off if just taught lefty but???

yeah ---I have a buddy that "reaches over the top " to work his bolt, he has tried left guns but he is rt. eyed and you know the rest

I've built a few 20PPC's for customers. It's a nice accurate 20 cal hot rod.
