22-250 groups of paper target

new to the forum; a friend suggest I try to find remedy here. thanks in advance for any assistance.

have a Rem 700 22-250 with light field barrel. often the gun shoots 2 and 3 shot groups that either touch or in the same hole; then a flier shows up! usually within an inch of the group, but sometimes up to 1 1/2 inch. this happens pretty consistently. friend suggested this is a symptom of an issue with the gun

I have found that a clean barrel makes a great difference; but lately it wants a dry patch every 10 shots and Hoppe's #9 bore cleaner every 20 or so. last week with a very clean barrel it shot three consecutive 3-shot groups all touching or same hole but each with one flier! then things opened up a bit up to 20 shots

been using hand loads and some favorite factory ammo it historically did well with.

plan to try again cleaning barrel after each 3-shot group using Hornady VMax 55 grain Varminter loads.

could be operator, but it seems to be more than this.

any help would be appreciated

How fast are you shooting your groups because if it is light weight sporter it will heat up fast and this could be the cause. Is the barrel free floated? Welcome to the forum as it has tons of imfo.

I don't let the barrel heat up too much, but I'll keep it slow next time out.

barrel is free-floated; my buddy suggested that the mounting screws may be too tight or not tight enough; where can I find torque spec on this?

cold barrel shot is about 3/4 to 1 inch higher that other shots; but this is not always a consistent thing either

thanks for the greeting - just hoping to clear this up. the gun can be a real shooter on a good day.

Ed,
You may have a common problem with sporting barrels, and it may not be with your rifle or load.
the amount of powder being burnt causes alot of recoil, the rifle jumps from each shot.
try something out, shoot 3x three shot groups,
1st one group free recoil, let it jump how it wants
2nd holding lightly with trigger hand, use the other to squeeze rear bag, not the gun
3rd holding the forend down, and gently pull the stock back into the shoulder, be very consistent each time
see what happens

I would try first to rebed the action, recoil lug and in front 1" of the recoil lug using one of the epoxy bedding compounds. make sure the bbl is free and do not put pressure down on the foreend when shooting.

Not uncommon for a factory rifle to shoot like that, especially a sporter weight barrel. I'm sure if you called Remington they would tell you a 1.5 inch group meets their accuracy requirements. Bedding the action should help some, but no guarantee it will.

Chasing extreme one hole accuracy with a factory rifle can will drive you crazy.

ed being it's a rem 700 it could be a bedding problem, sporter barrel it's one of the plastic stock guns. you can loosen the action screws stand the rifle up while pushing the barreled action against the recoil lug and tighten the front screw tight then tighten the rear screw. it may be bouncing off the recoil lug. if that does not fix it I would look to the scope and mounting. then I call it for a barrel.
