22/250 + bullet jump?

Ok, I have a new, factory 22/250 and to shoot a 50-55gr bullet I either have very little bullet in the case neck or I have to have a bunch of "jump" which looks like the way I have to go short of having it rechambered. So, for you guys with a problem like mine, how much jump seems to work best in yours?

For what its worth Ole, I shoot 52gr. Berger Match Varmints in Savage VLP with only about .100" of bullet in the neck and have good accuracy that way. Set up like that I am jumping the bullet .005" on top of the standard 38.0 gr. H380. On the other hand. The factory Federal ammo I was shooting, loaded with 55gr. Blitzkings, were being jumped .135" and shot very well. Try both and shoot what the rifle tells you it likes.

Needed another gun for an upcoming PD trip, new bbl won't be here in time, put the original, pretty worn out 22-250 bbl back on a LRPV, 34g Dogtown/VNE bulk slugs over 37g milsurp 4895, 4250 FPS, about .160 jump. 10 on a dime.
I personally don't care if it jumps -.010" or a 1/4 mile as long as it shoots 1/4 MOPD.
Bottom line is for every combo you will find jump distance ranges where it shoots good, and ranges where it shoots lousy, and just because the throat is pretty worn doesn't mean it won't shoot OK. 22-250's are all about pretty rapid throat wear.

Ole -

Howdy !

Fred Sinclair advised me many years ago, to try couple thou off the lands to start out with.

In both factory and custom rifles of varying calibres/barrel length/twist; my bullet seating tests all seem to end up back at around .001 - .003" off the rifling; after all is said and done.

My loads, my rifles.

My 22-250 has quite a bit of freebore as well. From what information I have been able to gather on the subject, that is a fairly common thing with 22-250's.

When I do load development for my rifles, I test seating depth from touching the rifling to .120 off the rifling in .040 increments. I have yet to find a load that shot better touching the rifling than seated off the rifling. The difference in accuracy has been pretty dramatic in favor of shorter seating depths, even with VLD type bullets. None of my rifles have match type chambers, so I don't know if that is a factor or not.

My 22-250 shoots its best groups with both 50g VMAX's and 52g AMAX's seated .040 off the lands. My advice is to do some good solid load development with your rifle before drawing any conclusions. If you are not able to find a handload that shoots well at any seating depth, then worry about re-cutting the chamber.

I agree with 357Mag, my Savage Predator in 22-250 wants the bullets from .002-.005 off the lands. The bullet of choice is a 55gr Sierra Blitz King.

With my Savage 22-250, I am shooting 52 grain Sierra MK's at paper just at the lands, had tried various seating depths and this works the best in my rifle. For chucking I use 55 grain Nosler BT's and they like it at .010 off the lands. There is no hard and fast rule or measurement on this subject. As has been mentioned your rifle will let you know what it likes.

Ok, I have a new, factory 22/250
What factory What twist
Had two Savage 22-250 12twist 26" they shot the best with 55-v-max 32gr benchmark 3500-3600fps seated to neck shoulder about .080 jump shot dimes 200rds. lands wore .025 adj. seat & powder 32.2gr still shot dimes & nickels for the next 200 the lands wore faster another .040 again adj. seat & powder .080 jump 32.5gr powder it was down hill from there dollar size at 600rds. total wear .100+ .
Not sure what caused the fast wear velocity or jump.
New barrels on both 6mm br & 243 may rechamber both 22-250 barrels and start over with no jump some day

Do you need to shoot the gun from the magazine or is it going to be used as a single shot? If a single shot, a 1/10" in the case should be ok as that is what I must uses in a 6TCU Win 70. If loaded in magazine, that lenght is too little and bullets will come off cases when loaded. Sounds like you have the " factory 22-250 syndrom". They put a 1/12" barrel on the gun (works w/ flat base 55gr bullets and shorter) but then throat it to load with 80gr bullets. I think that Savage puts 1/9" on their 223Rem but still uses 1/12" on 22-250s. Why? I guess its lucky that they don't still uses the 1/14" that required the smi-round nose 48gr bullets.
