22-250 built on an enfield question.

I had a friend of mine bring me a sporterized enfield that is chambered for a 22-250 that he picked up from someone that has been in his safe for years.

The person that built it is not in business anymore and all they did for a spring and follower is stuck a remington 700 short action spring and follower in there with a bent piece of metal to make the mag box area smaller.

The rifle does not feed at all with rounds in the mag box. I put a mauser 98 follower and spring in there and got rid of the hack job bent piece of metal but it still does not want to feed consistant. Being that its a long action with a short action caliber If you didnt have the CRF and it was a push feed I feel it would work fine.

I also tried another enfield spring and follower and that didnt work at all.

Anyone by chance happen to get a 22-250 to feed on an enfield and if so what did you do to make it work? I will straight up say I hate Enfield's and I dont work on them but I am stuck working on this one.

That's normally what you do to make them work is weld a spacer in the back of the mag box and use a shorter follower. I have done Mauser's that way and it works good. Using a full length follower shouldn't work too well.

Try putting the spacer back in and get a Ruger M-77 follower for a 22-250, You may have to shape it to fit, It may work for you. Also make sure the chamber has a small chamfer on it, Sometimes that will cause a hang up. And check the extractor fit.

Thanks for the info. This rifle has a cone cut in the breach and the magazine box is not like a Mauser 98 its bedded in the stock. Did I say I really hate Enfields? :)

The piece of metal was just a bent triangle shape that someone stuck in there and when you put shells in they would pop right back out.

The issue is the cases are nose diving before they leave the mag box. I had a 98 spring and follower some what working but the spring was not very strong to begin with and even with me bending it after a few cycles they would nose dive again.

I ordered a new 98 spring and will see if that helps. I would have to look around for a ruger follower I do not have any in my stash.

Sounds like the feed rails may be too wide, But I would try that follower and a spacer. I am familiar with the 1917, The pic I put up was of a 98 Mauser T-Guard with a spacer installed, You can glue in a peice of Delrin instead of welding one in also.

Thanks. I will give that a try and thanks for finding that follower!

I was able to get this to feed by milling a mauser 98 follower to fit and using a strong spring. I left it as a full length and did not put a spacer in.
