22-250 BBl replacement last minute ( Savage Mod 12)

I must politely disagree with your opinion on this one. As evidence I will use the abundance of 14 twist factory rifles that shoot just fine with 50 and 55 grain bullets.
That's not what I meant. I'm saying that if you put a eight twist and a 12 twist Head to Head with anything above a 50 grain bullet there won't be much difference. However the eight twist will shoot a much greater variety of bullets that are 12 twist or a specially a 14 twist which tops out about 55 grain

You guys were right. My friend brought his used savage rifle to my place today. I messed around with bullet depth and worked up some loads. Ended up with 34 grs of IMR 3031. He was ticked to death with this (3) shot group.

Great groups Mark! Never tried 3031 in mine, one likes Varget and the other prefers H4350. What I love about the 22-250 is that they shoot a lot of powders well.

The best advice for a Savage barrel, is 1. Don't use a borescope, if you don't want to see an ugly barrel. 2 Clean it when the accuracy falls off. I have a bunch of them, and other than the 6BR none look great with the borescope, but all but one shoots bugholes, and I am still working on that one to see what it can do, "1-9 12fv barrel". My personal history with them, is they seem to like a few rounds down them before they really start to shoot, not all but most.

That barrel is a keeper. A replacement won't be any better. Shoot it until it's worn out .

You bet! Got a new take off Savage FV 26" 22-250 barrel a couple of years ago. Cut it down to 22". It is a hummer! A Shilen or Criterion may shoot as well but I don't intend to spend over $300 to find out.

I agree to a point with #1. Years ago, I bought a model 16 in 260 Remington, couldn't get it to shoot anything. A friend of mine had bought a bore scope so we took a peek, horrendous. I sent the images to Savage and they replaced the barrel. The new one wasn't much better, scoped it and it was horrible too. I replaced it with a Shaw and it looks like it was rifled with a hatchet and shoots like it was too.

My FVSS hadn't been cleaned in a while, so I looked at the bore before I cleaned it. I was pleasantly surprised, very little copper and a nice, smooth bore. After cleaning I scoped it again, this is a very nice barrel.
