22-250 barrel

hi,im new here and have a question.my savage 110 needs a new barrel,i just varmit hunt with it.im wanting a 26in 1-9 twist,will the 62gr barnes stabilize?

Sagebrush I have a 26" 1-9" twist barrel on my .22-250. Factory Savage stainless, fluted. It shoots the light weight 52gr Berger Match Varmints extremely well. The heaviest bullet I've put through it was the Hornady 60 gr. varmint bullets, soft point and flat base. It shot those sub MOA also but not as good as the Bergers. I have used 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips and 55gr Sierra Blitzkings and it eats those well too. Like the new .22-250 guide on here says, a 1-9" twist is a good all around twist option for this cartridge. Also, according to Bergers quick reference chart a 1-9" twist will use their 70gr VLD and their 73gr BTHP. I don't know how far you're going to be shooting but, with the heavier 60-70gr bullets, the b.c. is there for some pretty long range varmint work. In my opinion, a 1-9" twist is plenty good!

According to the Barnes listing in my Sinclair catalog, the 62 gr triple-shock x bullet requires a 1:9" or faster to fascilitate its use. Hope that helped!

75 Amax box states that a 1/8 is required but I am loading them for a buddy in a straight 22-250 with a Shilen 1/9 and it shoots them very well. With the 75 Amax the 22-250 is an entirely different round than it is with the light bullets.

my 250 was always my pickup rifle, and now that im retired and bored to death i decided to do alotta hunting.i hunt in SE oregon and some shots are long so im interested in loading for heavier bullets.i load now and with 1-14 have a hard time getting the 53gr barnes to stabilize.everything else works and i shoot 55gr hornady and bergers great.

thank god for hogue stocks

Barnes bullets are almost entirely of copper construction. With that being said the bullets have a longer bearing surface to get to whatever weight they are to be. For example the 6mm 62gr Barnes Varmint Grenade requires a 1:10" twist barrel to stabilize it. Any 62gr weight range bullet from almost any other manufacturer will stabilize in a 1:14" twist barrel. You see where I'm going? If you knew this already I apologize for the ramble ;)!

Sage-

I find your comment very interesting as I have (3) 22-250's all built on REM 700 SA and all of them are very sub-MOA rifles with handloads (actually, I have never shot a centerfire rifle round that was factory from any caliber!).. I run 1:14 @ 26" in all 3 rifles using mostly Berger 55's in Target & Varmint configuration as well as some Sierra HP's, Spitzers & Nosler B-Tips (ranging from 52-55's in these 2 brands). I BR prep all of my brass, weight sort, etc, etc, etc & they shoot fantastic. I tried some Barnes 53's and they shot so terrible I threw the rest of the box in the garbage which didn't hurt my feelings as I got them for free.

All the Barnes bullets require setting back well off the lands. The TSX will usually require seating .050" off the lands. I mean exactly .050", I have experimented with the TSX and Varmint Grenades in .204, .223, .257 and 6mm, the TSX shot horribly until seated .050" off the lands and then shot under .5" 10 shot groups at 100 yards. The Varmint Grenades work between .020" and .070" off the lands. They usually shoot well at factory OAL.

You can't get a barrel twist that is too fast for the Barns bullets. I use a 1:8" for the 6mm 62 grain VG, a 1:8.5" Twist for the .204" 26 grain VG to the 50 grain Berger Boat Tail, and a 1:9" for the 26 to 50 grain .224 VG's, even in the .22-250.
