22-250 AI with 8 twist and 80 grain bullets

I bought a McGowen prefit 8 twist 26 inch barrel with a brake off the site a few months back for my sons Savage 110 single shot action. I fireformed 50 pieces of Lapua brass with 52 grain Sierra's and accuracy was outstanding, finally got around to shooting some 80 grain Sierra MK's today over some H4350 @ .010 off the lands in the Improved case. This is my first foray with a 22-250AI and I can say that it seems to be one heck of a performer. After cleaning with some JB and borescoping the throat looks a little long in the tooth and a loaded round with an 80 SMK plugged in at the lands the base of boattail is about .040 ahead of the neck shoulder junction. I want to order a reamer and was wondering what the freebore should be with a Sierra 80 SMK or Hornady 80 A-Max? Best I can come up with is somewhere around .100 freebore. Anyone playing with one of these and 80 grain bullets? The 75 A-Max is pretty far out in the case and thats what previous owner used. I don't really want to set back as I feel the barrel should be around 28 inches for the 80 grainers.

I had a plain 22-250 that I shot 80 SMKs with H4350 that was a real good long range varmint rifle. The only bad thing was the bbl life (less than 1000 rnds). Had it set back and chambered to a 22br and I like it alot better. Not that much less velocity and more accurate. Your 22-250AI should be a great long range rifle shooting 80s just don't expect long bbl life, but it will be alot of fun while it lasts. Good luck.

Yes, I can see where it would have short barrel life, but to me barrels are consumables. The H4350 seems to be a good powder in this cartridge. Shot 6 rounds last evening and barrel was warm, so I can see life being shorter if barrel is heated up. I would think it would be great for chucks as you may only shoot 4-5 rounds in an hour, and those 80 A-Maxs should do the job on chucks, and use the 80 SMK's for informal paper punching. Neat cartridge!

Frank,

The best bet would be to seat a couple of dummy rounds with each bullet at your chosen depth and send them in the the reamer guy to dupe.

Alf, 10-4, I will seat one of both and take to my smith who has a direct line with Kiff. I was trying to measure last nite before i posted this thread by seating a 80 grain MK to neck/shoulder junction and trying to take a rough measurement with one locked caliper set at .223 on the bullet and the other trying to measure distance from end of case mouth to first caliper, I was coming up with right at .100, and the throat on this barrel with same bullet touching the lands is measuring right at .150 freebore and its pretty far up in the case neck. basically I am thinking out loud, :) :D

Why is the barrel life so short with the 80 grain bullets ?
I thought it would be longer with a heavier bullet going slower with less powder.

I bought barrel used and gentleman said that it had ~350 rounds thru it, but upon borescoping it upon arrival I think it was more than that, I cleaned it with JB and Witches Brew, and throat is longer than it was new, but it shoots very well. I would think that a new tube shooting 80 grainers would go 1200-1500 rounds? Barrel is too short to set back and with the .257 chamber from McGowen and a loaded .252 round with Lapua brass it shoots very well. It can only do better with a new tube in 22-250 AI about 29 inches long set up for 80 grain class bullets and a tite neck chamber of around .252. :)

Frank, i have had several 22-250 and 243 AI,s in the past either built on a Remy or Kelbly built 1s. They where all exceptional performers and deadly on varmints. They are so easy to load for and they where a snap to find the load and bullet i wanted to shoot with very little work. The 1s i had where not picky on selection. Wish i still had them, thats why i am having a 22-250 built right now :P

Dan, I have never owned a 22-250AI until I bought this barrel, and its looking like a lot of fun. Very intriguing cartridge especially with some 80 grainers in an 8 twist barrel. I am thinking of a combo varmint and LR groundhog match rifle built on a Remy action I have laying around, my son can finish wearing this one out. ;)

Heres a pic of target my 11 yo shot with lapua brass and Sierra 52 MK's with a jump of about .125 at 100 yards. 3 shot fireforming group with the 22-250AI.

I shoot the 77 and 80 gr Sierra bullets in my 22 -6mm. I have found that I get my best accuracy with the bullets seated so that I get abt. .020 of scuff marks on the bullets when seated into the chamber. With this seating lenth I have no trouble with sticking bullets when unloading a live round. I would leave you throught alone as it will shoot out and just cut your powder back a small amount. That way as your through lenthens you can just seat your bullets out and mauntain accuracy for more shots.

can someone post a pic of a 22-250AI cartridge? Has anyone here ever shot a 22-250AI in competition? I would think a 22BR would be a better choice if competition was the order? Lee

The 22 BR would probably be better in comp, but my 11 YO is driving tacks with this stock Savage and prefit barrel and he'll be entered this saturday in one of our local GH matches. But I am liking what I see and dad may have to have one built based on a tite neck chamber of about .252 throated for 80 Sierra's and lapua brass. :)

And thats a sweet looking case 2644ever! Is that a Cutting Edge bullet?
