22-250 AI info

I'm looking for some info on a 22-250 AI, if anyone has one, how do you like it? Also looking for any good loads. I just picked this gun up from a friend, he hasn't shot it much maybe 50-100 rds. Rem 700 24 inch barrel 1:14 twist.

Mine all have custom 8 twist barrels on them and I shoot only 75 grain A-max's in them.
I don't plan on parting with them ever.... darn good shooters..
Your 14 twist won't handle that weight but the 40 grain BT's should be a heck of a bullet with H-4350 behind it....

i have a 22-250AI with a 26inch 14 twist tube and worked up a fine load of 40gr imr 4064 pushin a 50gr blitzking 4000fps with a cci br2 primer puttin it all into movement. love the cartridge, wish i had it in a gun other than a cooper and its one flat shooter

Elkers -

Howdy !

I recommend you shoot 55s or even shorter non-custom 60s; to exploit the full range capabilities of the gun. These would arrive w/ best retained energy, no matter what the live target.

For powders, I suggest you go w/ powders like WW760/H414, I4350, VV160; or perhaps a tad slower. 24" is enough to burn these.

Also, please DO try the Large rifle Mag primers, esp FED LR Magnum Match if you can. My high-intensity .224" cal wildcat really came alive, when these primers became available.

Best of luck in your endeavors !

Regards,

I had a 22-250AI with a 26inch 1 in 12 twist, that I used mainly for crows and goats. I used the 60 gr Nosler partition for goats and 50 gr on crows.
There are a host of powers that work very well in the 250 AI. But I liked 60 gr Nosler and 35.5 gr of RL 15 fed 210. For 3650fps or 50gr sierra bliz and 39 gr of IMR 4895 fed 210 for 3980fps.

Fastnflat, did you ever try any 40 gr ballistic tips in your 14 twist? The one load that he used was 41.5 grs Imr 4895 with the 40 grain bts he said it ran them at about 4300 fps and shot good.

I have one built on a Ruger Model 1 action. 1 - 14 Shilen barrel. It damn well shoots! Look at loading data for 220 Swift to get an idea what you might want to consider for loads. Brass lasts almost forever. Your barrel, unfortunately, will not, especially if you hotrod it a lot. You have a good start with the 700 action. Toast this barrel and get somebody to do another when it goes. I'll never be without one again.

I have one built on a savage short action with a shilen select match barrel, modified trigger etc with a bell & carlson medalist stock. It shoots great. The only problem I had was case galling caused by sharp surfaces on the locking lugs and the bolt guide ways. The remmy wont have the problem. I use the .220 swift imfo for working up loads. There are ackley books for sale written by P O Ackley himself.

Mine have all been 14twist. For a long time I used W760 powder, it was fast and very accurate with 50's. Then I started shooting RL15 which is even faster and more accurate.

Using Reloder 15......the fireform load in a 25" Walther barrel was mid-38's and a 50BT at 4100. With formed brass the load is up towards 40gr RL15, haven't chrono'd it. In a 28" Hart and formed brass, the load is around 40gr pushing a 50@4240. A rechambered Rem. sporter barrel, the load was RL15 and a 50BT @ 4100. There've been a few others that were never chrono'd. For me Reloder 15 has been fastest and most accurate.

Chambers are 0 freebore, .255" and .250" nk. Brass is PMC, Rem9-1/2 or CCI 250 primer, Lee Lube on bullets.

Thanks guys, anyone tried the 22-250 lapua brass?

I got my hands on the 22-250 Lapua the second I was able to get it.. I have (3) 22-250's with one in the AI chambering & I shoot them a lot. I love the Lapua brass hands down as it is very consistent and the quality is great as Lapua usually is. I have been spending a lot of time in the past BR prepping WIN brass for my 22-250's & I did try some Nosler Custom which was not bad but didn't come close to the Lapua. It is nice to be able to have Lapua in the 22-250 caliber, FINALLY!

If your still in need of some load info try reloaders nest for some starting points.

I have a 22-250 Improved in a 26" Lilja barrel. My 2 loads that I use are 41 grs of H380 x 55 gr BT x CCI 250 primer. Running about 3800 fps. 2nd load is 39grs of Varget x 50gr BT x CCI 200. I always use a mag primer with a ball powder, no need with Varget. Both are accurate.

Sorry,
Hadn't checked this in a while. That's a no turn neck. I do skim cut them to eliminate any thick sides.
