22-250 Ackley

Just curious what kind powders you guys are using on this caliber. Just got done breaking new barrel in plus sight up.
Something with decent speed plus good accuracy be my choice;) Was hoping to get between 3400 to 3500 using 75 gr A-Max, 26" 8 twist krieger barrel.

Thanks !

I havent gotten around to shooting mine I got in yet, still working on other rifles, but I am going to try reloader 15 first. some people mentioned H414 (I THINK) to get the real fast 4000+ speeds... I am not looking for 4000 though. I have an 8 twist and have narrowed it down to 60gr-64 gr bullets that I am going to run... I dont have info for heavier bullets like the 75gr...

I have had a few 22/250 AI's, 12 twists Harts. Also, one rem sporter rechamber, shot well.

In our predator calling club in S. Ca. there were probably a dozen guys that shot this round. Out of those 12 guys, 10 shot win 760 with 55g Sierra or 55g Nosler bullets, velocity at 4050-4100 depending on the barrel.

Another guy shot H380 with the 50's, and another shot H414 with the 55's. IN those days, H414 was about .5g slower than win 760.

So, I in minimum freebore with a 27" barrel, I also shot the Berger 60 and 65g flat base(65 no longer made). 37g of Win 760 got me 3700 fps with the 65's, it is a very high pressure load that required F.L. sizing after every firing, but accuracy was in the low 2's. I actually shot a bob cat in half at 100 yards with the 65g at 3700.

Now, you jack up the twist rate, figure increasing pressure another 10% at least, so if you try 760, back way off these loads that I mentioned.

R#15 works real well with the 50g Nosler, I have good load for my current two rifles with it, but the accuracy node is also on a high pressure with speed in the 4050 fps in the re chamber'd Rem 22/250 Varmint and accuracy is outstanding.

If you want to shoot medium pressures with extreme accuracy in the 22/250, good luck. I would just go out on a limb and say that in my experience, it never happened and I shot with a lot of guys with custom 22/250 AI's and they all liked 95% full throttle or higher.

I played with IMR 4064 and IMR 4350 just a tad with the 55g Ballistic tip, got fantastic accuracy, but what a pain those stick powders are.

The 22/250 AI is my favorite coyote round, hits like a sledge hammer with Sierra 55g what evers and the Nosler 55g.

I quit shooting the 50's when I had an incident happen. Larry Z. and I were up in S. Dakota wearing out a dog town. I was zero'd in on a party that spread out from 300-325, had the target knobs dialed in for minute of p. dog head. I shot one p. dog, he flew up in the air doing helicopter gyrations. All of a sudden, a coyote runs up and is on the p. dog just as it hit the ground. I slammed another round home, and while the coyote had his mouth pointing up toward the sky, trying to guzzle down as much p. dog as he could without choking, I put the fine cross hair right across the bridge of both eyes. At the report of the gun, he went out of sight and that resounding, PLOP was heard, just like the bullet had hit a brick wall. Larry and shot till we got tired, then walked over to take a look at the coyote. He still had pieces parts of p. dog in his mouth, and the bullet hole (50g Nosler at 4200 fps MV) had entered the skull about 1 1/2" to the left of point of aim, right above his left eye. The bullet had not exited the coyote's skull! Now at 325 yards, the bullet had slowed down, but it turned me off on penetration for a coyote round. So, I went back to the Nosler 55's and the Sierra 55's FB, SptBT, and the 55g BTHP. I like a bullet that will break shoulders, hips, ribs and put them to leaking on the off side.

Howdy !

Apples and near apples......

My wildcat .22-35 Rem has case capacity between that of .22-250 & .22-250AI.

I got 3,500 from a 28" barrel 1-8, when shooting 75"A"-Max over 40.5gr AA3100 + FED LR Magnum Match. In my gun/my loads, AA3100 bested IMR4831 and VV560 under the 75's.

IMHO -
WW760/ H414 was a better choice for 55s, esp when shot from a 24" 1-14 barrel.
VV160 pushed the 55s a tad faster than did WW760.

I am also a H414 fan with my ackley. 4150 FPS with the 55 grain ballistic tips.

Could also try RL17, H4350, some people even have good luck with Varget.

with the 75 amaxs i chose H4350, when this question was asked before someone posted best velocity results with Reloader 15, or 17 i cant remember, ive never shot any reloader powders yet, so forgive me for not remembering. mine was a 24" 9twist. my best accur. was at 3350fps. the sad thing for me was my fireforming loads of IMR 4064 and sierra 52hp. was even more accurate than any 75 amax load i could find.

I used H1000 and Ramshot Magnum in my 8 twist with 75 grain Amaxes. Not as much speed as H4350, but accuracy was impressive at long range.

BAT action, 1:9x26" Broughton, Robertson stock, Jewell trigger, I've exhausted various formulas for the 53Vmax and best accuracy was .196" @ 110 yds. but opens up @ 330 yds to 1.5 - 1.75 inches which I've tried unsuccessfully to get into the 1.0" area.
This LOAD is Lapua brass, CCIBR2, 41.0 RL15
Will be trying IMR4007SSC (have a few pounds) which is similar to H380 but better. If the 53Vmax doesn't improve @ 330 yards then I'll switch bullets.
Varget was best with 53Vmax w/36.8 @3716 fps (too slow)
Berger 73gr w/H4350 was best with 39.5-39.9 grs. @ avg vel. of 33-3354 w/nice horizontal groups measuring 1.5-2.0" @ 330 yds.
AMax 75gr w/H4350 was awful since velocities dropped with increased powder levels started at 38.4 too 39.8gr., I didnt pursue loading this bullet anymore so my initial experience might be unfair. I'd recommend a slower powder for better results with 75 gr or larger bullets.
