22-250 55gr V max

I have a 22-250 that really likes 55gr Hornaday Varmint Express factory loads.(old stuff @ 10 years old). It will shoot < 1/2 moa at 100 yds no problem.
I have not been able to reproduce or even come close with my loads. I have tried H380 and IMR 8208.
I realize Hornaday has their own blend of powder but does anyone know what would be a good match?
Thanks

I have no idea what Hornaday uses but I have had excellent accuracy using H4895 for several of my friends rifles. This is MEMORY which should be verified but I believe the charge is 34grs. I use H380 because it meters so well but you NEED to use a magnum primer with it or you will be disappointed. Varget is another good choice but is in short supply most places.

Any/all of the ball powders are harder to ignite. The same load using H414 in an 06 went from 2 1/2" group to 5/8" group/5 shot and 200 fps increase in velocity. Everything else was the same. You might not see that great of a variation with H380 in the 22-250 but there will be a difference.

H380 is a extremely good powder choice, as is Varget, and H4895, but still to date, my most accurate loads for the 22-250 is IMR 4064. for some reason it out shoots all other powders ive tried.

Same for me. My old 700 really shines with IMR4064 and 50-55gr

I use a heavy load of H414 and the Sierra 55bk at 3725fps, wont say the grains as my load is above Hogdon max (which is a low Cup load) and the 9 1/2 primers, shoot .200 and better in a 40x hart combo.

I don't own a 22-250, but have loaded 55 gr Hornady sp for friends that do and 4064 always has worked well. Barlow

Howdy !

I recommend you try WW760 ( H414 same stuff ) and FED LR Magnum Match primers. WW760 worked better than I4064 in multiple .22-250s that I tried both in.

I also strongly recommend use of Hornady 55SX with the above, especially for things like " Soybeanus Digestus " at ranges of 400 and under.

With regards,
Kevin

Kevin, thanks for your suggestion, however, I have found the 9 1/2 work fine with h414/760 when the load gets up to max or near max.

the Hodgdon data list the max pressure load at 46cup while it takes other powders to 50cup+ thus I slowly in .2gr steps took the h414 up until the pressure ring showed its ugly head then backed off .2 and yahoo, no ignition problems with std primers and a clean burn. no pressure signs, very very little holes 2 groups shot back to back both under .200

I would post a copy of the groups shot under .200 with this load but don't know how to reduce their size to be accepted here.

Thanks for all the input folks.
I tried changing powder to IMR4064 (had it on my shelf), that proved to be the winning ticket in my rifle. I shot yesterday and had great results.
Now that I am not pulling my hair out and with the help of some Rogaine, my head wont get so sunburned ;D
