.22-250 30 degree improved.

Sooo,

This was just a thought to be in the "Ballpark" of a .22 Creedmoor but use Lapua brass.

I hadn`t even given any thought to the .22-250`s shoulder angle, oops.....

Since many have come forth and stated that they have had NO problems feeding the 40* Ackley shoulder, in .22-250AI form, that is a no brainer.

The .243 30* or .243 40* are still in the running also, but right now I`m just tossing around some ideas........I`m bored and looking for opinions and factual experience.

Thanks guy`s.

Phil.

Bored?? Too early for the true cabin fever of winter fame to set in Phil. Regardless, have some fun along the way.

If/when you build this screamer, you may consider having the bbl treated = Melanite or similar. That will make it last a Lonnnng time with the powder you'll be pouring through it. $100 minimum many places = best buck you've ever spent.

A very knowledgeable explanation of this on Varminthunters.com a few days back in General Discussion. Very knowledgeable.

CS...I think a "true" AI will have a 40° shoulder. It also blows out the case taper to increase capacity. Then there is always the case growth and a bit less bolt thrust - so some say.

After P.O got his AI name going, a lot of wildcatters called their creation an Ackley Improved if they changed the angle. I've heard of 35° being called "Ackley". I think it became a generic name for that type of improvement.

Pause......

I'm back. I just leafed through a book published by Wolfe on cartridge dimensions/drawings. That pretty well proved out the above. There were/are some designations that will include the shoulder angle in the chambering name. E.G. .257 Roberts Improved (RCBS 28°), 250-3000 Improved (30°), then the 250-3000 Ackley Improved - which is 40° for comparison. RCBS seemed to like the 28° and labeled several chamberings that way.

Ackley got most of the attention, but Mashburn was a proponent of improved cases as well - he preferred a 30° shoulder, so if the improved case has a 30° shoulder, it is a Mashburn Improved case..... e.i. 250-3000 Mashburn.

While Ackley was a gunsmith (metal worker), Mashburn was a excellent rifle maker, and built beautiful rifles that are considered works of art.

I'm another that has 22-250 AI 40 degree that feeds without any problem. 700 action with the original 22-250 follower.

I run a 22-250AI on a defiance devient SA, AI mag, manners stock. works flawlessly as well. 12 twist, running 64 gr. bergers?... lapua brass, reloader 15

next barrel will be 22BR 14 twist to go back to berger 52gr fb bullets. my 12 twist wont shoot anything under 60 gr in the 250AI..

700 BDL with factory follower, no changes to feed rail or follower, they just work.
You answered his question 3 years ago...

Since this was brought back from the dead though. If a guy wanted a 30 degree shoulder a 22-47L would be pretty close to the same capacity as a 30 degree 22-250
