22-243 middlestead

Hello
I keep seeing comments that there is load data for the middlestead but I am not finding it. If someone would direct me or post loads they like for 80 gr bullets, probably Amax I sure would appreciate it.
probably use RL-22 but interested in what anyone likes.

Here ya go,

http://reloadersnest.com/query_bw.asp?CaliberID=100&BulletWeight=80

My 22-243 loved RL22 with CCI primer

I'm shooting one and my Kreiger 26" 8 twist likes RL 25 (47.5-49gr) Retumbo (49-50gr) IMR7828 (46.5-47.5gr) all of these loads were shot under 80 Amax SMK Nosler CC and 80.5 Berger. All powders averaged 3500fps plus with great accuracy. These are safe loads in my setup as always start low and work up.

How do you like your Middlestead so far, I love mine it's a 28" 12 twist. I shoot 69gr Sierra's over 4000 and 77gr Sierra's 3800
it's funny I can shoot 77gr but i can't shoot 75gr Vmax's or 80gr Bergers, what's not to love it's has nastyness written all over it.

I love mine mine. It is one of the easiest calibers I have to load for. My load work is basically pick nearly any 80gr I wanto shoot set them .005 from the rifling and load one of the 3 powders I mentioned and u will find an accurate load. At least that is my experience with my barrel. Also some say barrel burned but I'm at 800 rounds and haven't had to chase the lands still loading the same OAL that I did when I got the barrel and it had 100 rounds through it. Now as far as shooting the 77 in a 12 I can believe it works but I think since the 77's generally have more bearing surface than the 75's and 80's would explain why those particular ones won't stabilize. At least that would be my guess.

Not got to shoot mine but for one group at 100 so far. Still have to round up some dies.
This rifle was built 20 odd years ago and was shot less than 100 rounds. The man who owned it got married and had kids. He has not done much shooting since.Ha
He decided he wanted to sell it so I got a chance at it.It seems like it is going to shoot.
It is a 7 twist and for now I am looking to shoot 80gr Amax. Hope to do some long range coyote hunting this winter.

A 7 twist is a good option. The only thing is u may not be able to run them as fast as I am b/c mine will blow bullets up if it gets dirty. I keep mine clean. Out of habit I clean mine every 60-70 rounds. May not need to but I have found bullets will blow up if it gets dirty.

Hey Red, I own the reamer so when it is time to re throat or set back let me know I can hook you up. the 77gr sierra's have a much shorter bearing surface than they 75gr Amax's or 80gr Bergers. I am sure that's why they work. I bet you a 10 twist would make those 75s and 80s cooperate, you have to be willing to stuff the case with powder and send them not lob them.

For the 69gr Sierra's I use a compressed load 48gr+ of RL17, and for the 77gr Sierra's I use a compressed load 48gr+ of RL22.

Thanks Kanuck I will get in touch when that happens. The Retumbo load that I shoot I have to tap the case to get the powder down so that I can seat the bullet and not crunch powder. That particular load will push the 80.5's at 3620fps. A 10 will more than likely work great but I will probably go with a 9 twist once this barrel is completely done.

I use 51.0 grs of Retumbo in my 22-243 AI...= 3558 fps

It slams coyotes into the dirt.

I call it the JUDGE, because it's like the Hand of God smacks them.

I use all brands of brass and they work fine, It is pretty cool and rare that you can use Lapua brass in a wildcat if you choose to, that doesn't happen very often.

Question as this round is new to me. What are the differences between the Ackley and Middlested. Do they both have the same shoulder angle?
I have read the info I have found so far but it seems to be conflicting.

The difference between an AI and a Middlestead, is an AI has a 40 deg shoulder and a middlestead has a 30 deg shoulder.
I could have went with either but I have so many AI and none of them feed well, so I thought it would be nice to have something that I could do a follow up shot. I never really need to but it is nice to have that option.

Ackley has a 40* shoulder middlestead has a 30 or 35* shoulder. (Can't remember which it has)Ackley has a little bit more cas capacity being that it has a steeper shoulder. I personally haven't had any issue yet with the AI cases or the Middlestead as far as feeding from the from a staggerfeed savage mag but as mentioned some have had issues with the AI.

Thanks again for the info. I am new to this site and I must say it is nice to be able to ask a question and get an answer with out all the dripping sarcasm.
Thank you Gentlemen.

With that 7 twist that you have you will be able to shoot 90gr bullets, and even if it is not throated for them. You can just sink them into the case and you will still have plenty of room to fill it with powder.

I was wondering about the Sierra 77gr mentioned earlier. I seem to have good luck with Sierra. I wondered if the shorter bearing surface would not be as hard on the barrel at about the same speed.
No point in shooting this round without speed. But I would be willing to not shoot max velocity for longer barrel life. I wonder what the most efficient load would be.
