.22-243 Load Questions

Hey everybody new to the board! Starting to get back into reloading after 20 years. I just had a 22-243 built and am looking for some load data. I picked up a set of Forster dies for it. I have some .243 brass ready to run through the sizer but I can't find a lot of info for the 22-243, I can find some for the 22-243 Middlestead but not the Win. Does anybody have any loads they would share. The barrel is 22" with a 1:12 twist and I would like to stay with 50-60 grn bullets. Main use is Coyote hunting.

That's about the same case capacity as the 223 WSSM. I look at it for starting points for my 22-6mm also. The old Hodgdon #26 and #27 manuals has load data for the 220 Jaybird and the 22 Cheetah based off the .308 Win.

H 414 43.0 gr is a good mild load up to and possibly above 46.0 gr.

22-243 Win is in Quickload. I use 42.5 grains of Reloader 17 for a 55 grain bullet for an average velocity of 3530. I'd start at 40.0 grains.

Please edumokate me. Looking at the above numbers, whats the advantage of a 22-243 over a 22-250? I'm not knocking the cartridge, just curious.

I agree! My 22-250 easily runs over 3500 FPS with a 55 grain bullet. A 22-243 would be a waste at those speeds.

I have a 22-243AI that runs over 3600 FPS with a 75 Amax. Maximum point blank range is its game. Just sight in a little high at 100 and hold on fur out past 300. It sure makes it easy when you don’t have time to grab a range finder.

My reasons will probably not satisfy you. I have a 22-243 for nostalgia sake. My father had several put together when I was a young teen. I got one when he died. My own personal thoughts on the issue is that I would rather have a 243 than either the 22-250 or 22-243.

Some of the reasons my Father liked the cartridge that I can remember were that you can use cheap military 308 brass to make them(especially when you have teen labor to do it for you). You can re-chamber a 22-250 into a 22-243 easily which will clean up the throat. It will slightly outperform the 22-250 due to the larger case capacity. Bullets were cheaper in 22 vs the 6mm bore so it was more economical than the 243. It worked well with the slow surplus powder (similar to 4831) that was $10 for a milk jug full back then. Lastly it scratches the wildcat itch that many develop.

I am so confused. I went all my life thinking a 243 is a 308 necked down to .243 and a 22-250 is a 308 necked down to .224.


I necked up 308 brass to .358". Is that a 308/358? Will it be OK on my 358win?

I necked up 3006 brass to .358 too. 358/06? OK in a 35 Whelen??

A 22-250 is a necked down 250-3000 savage, not a 308. That is where the 250 in the name comes from.
