22-204 is improved case. Shoulder moved forward and shortens neck up. 22-204 is a Bigger Boiler!

I know I "caught hell" so to speak over the same question in another thread; but in his defense, we were told by the gun rags early on that the .204 Ruger was basically a necked down .222 Remington Mag.

I am shooting the 22/204 Ruger with 69's at 3350 off of a 26", 9t Shilen, CFE is the powder. My 55's on the 26" are 3700 with Benchmark, 26" barrel. A Friend may chime in that used the same reamer, gets same velocity, accuracy at 200 is unbelievable for a non benchrest rifle. Friend had a new X Caliber barrel re chambered to the 22/204, running the 55g Sierra bthp in his AR 22", velocity is 3550ish with sub half inch accuracy.

As much as I love my 22-204, I've been killin coyotes with it for 16 yrs. I wouldn't consider it for an AR with the mag constraints. I think you would be better served with a 224 LBC, 22 Nosler, 224 Valkyrie or ever a 223AI. My shortest load is 2.300 with the Speer 52gr Flatbase HP and my 40gr NBT is at 2.390. You would be hard pressed to load anything to 2.260 to fit the AR mag.

I would run some 204 cases through a 22-250 sizing die and seat some bullets to see how short you can go.

One of the advantages of loading the 22-204 in a bolt action with a small bolt face is being able to load it long

Thanks AWS. Good info, like I say, just thinking out loud, and got the info I needed.

My current 22-204 reamer was throated for 80 grain Bergers at an OAL of 2.580" in the lands a bit. Definitely not AR friendly, but just peachy in a 700 2.800" 700 mag box.

Stay away from long pointed heavies or plastic tip bullets, and a shorter freebore, and it's a viable candidate for an AR, especially when paired with ACS magazines, that allow almost a full 2.315" loaded round.

For an experiment, I windowed the front of a P Mag and ran my 223 with 53 Vmax at 2.315", but have settled at 2.290" for a little fudge room in the ACS mag, with no difference in accuracy.
