2156 serria

If you go to the US Rifle Teams' Long range Forum

http://www.usrifleteams.com/lrforum/

and look in the 'Precision Reloading' section and/or the 'External Ballistics' section, you'll find a great deal of discussion on the 2156 and how to optimise performance.

It has a significantly higher BC than the older #2155, but is much less tolerant of jump etc. From the feedback from the Fullbore / Palma shooters on the Long Range Forum, it appears to need a lot of jump.

Personally, I've never found it an easy bullet to tune in my FTR 308, but many people like it and claim good results. I much prefer Berger's 155.5gn Target Fullbore design in this weight range - same BC, but ridiculously easy to get to shoot well and almost completely tolerant of throat erosion, but it is a lot more expensive than the Sierra MK.

2156 is an excellent bullet. Get it up to 3000 fps and jump it around .050" and I'll b shocked if it doesn't shoot great for you.

Erud, what chamber reamer do you use, inquiring Palma shooting minds what to know! Oh, and inquiring Fullbore shooters too. All I shoot are 2156’s and I have the 2011 Fullbore reamer on my present barrel. But, I am getting ready for a new barrel soon. Some of the guys I shoot with prefer the 95 reamer.

I also use the 2011 Fullbore reamer. I shoot a fairly even mix 2156's and Berger Hybrids in my Palma guns, and I use the same powder charge for both. I also don't adjust the seater die when switching between the 2, setting it for .045" jump on the Sierra's gives a .020" jump for the Hybrids, which is about perfect. Of course you may find some variation from those numbers when switching between different lots.

IMR-8208 XBR gives a nice 3,050 fps with small ES too in Lapua 'Palma' small primer brass. (32-inch barrel, so maybe a shade less in 30 inches.)

I am on the verge of moving from the 2155 to the 2156. My general take it that I will continue to use the same load. I actually have 2 loads, 1 for Winchester brass, the other for Lapua brass. The loads vary by .5 gr. I use imr-4064

46-47 gr Varget is a pretty standard Palma load from what I understand. I used to run 155s at 2950 using 46gr Varget. It hammered.

I’m shooting 1:12.5 twist with a 30 in barrel .... I only have access now to either varget or N150 with br2 primers ... I’m just trying to find something with those components!

Well, as others have said VarGet is really the default choice in the US. (Not for us in Europe anymore - banned by the EU from 1st June along with nearly all other Hodgdon and most IMR powders.)

I use a lot of Viht N150 in various cartridges though and it always has been one of my favourite 308 Win powders too. Most people will tell you it is too slow burning for 155s and that N140 is the natural Viht N100 series product for the combination, but N150 can give superb results in large primer brass. The problem you might have is getting the velocity as it usually produces compressed charges before you reach maximum pressures with this bullet weight. I'd suggest giving it a try though.
