215 grain berger Hybrid.

Hi, Anyone share their findings with the berger 215g Hybrid for FTR in 308 with 32in barrel, I read this bullet tad harder to tune than the lighter 200g-210g bergers but is their any other reason why they doint seem as popular for FTR as the 200g hybrid and 210g BT LR bullets appart from availability.

There is a fellow 6mmBR member on here whose handle is "Whatsthediff"... His name is Don Diffey... I know he has been working extensively with the 215Hybrid and he has a 32" barrel.. You could send him a P.M. and he will answer you..

The reason most guys went back to shooting 185s and 200s is because they (215s & 230s) are harder to handle on the bipod (Vertical issues).......I'm shooting 215s right now and they are shooting well, the load is just as accurate as my 185 juggernauts but you have to have good shooting form and be very consistent in everything you do.......If you can get the hang of shooting them and hold good vertical they are very good in the wind.

Jade is on the money. The same is true of F-Open shooting 230 Hybrids. There is no trick to getting either one to shoot well. My testing in .308 Win and .300 WSM has proven them very accurate. But, shooting consistently from bipod or rest, that's the trick.

I found the 215's to be extremely accurate up to about 500 meters but from there on they don't seem to be as stable as the lighter bullets in the winds. I wonder if the new emphases on faster twists will help with this problem. I love their BC and would really like to shoot them.

Hi, Steve - It looks like Shiraz used them to good effect, as he has several times previously. A 10" twist should be more than adequate for 215 Hybrids.

I agree that Shiraz did well and well deserved from what I heard the conditions were like but then why is the new emphasis on faster twist barrels? Do you know what he is using for twist?

Steve

I don't know but suspect that Shiraz is using a 10" twist. I'm currently using a 9.75" with 230's and may order some 9.5" twist. My testing shows that fast twists are usually not a problem unless they go much past ~6° helix angle. That equals ~9" in caliber .30. Bryan Litz's latest work would indicate 9.8" or faster for 215 Hybrids and 9.4" or faster for 230's @ 3000 and 2865 fps, respectively. That is a worst case scenario of 59°F and 0 elevation. The elevation at Ben Avery, ~1640' at the 1000 yard line, would significantly reduce twist requirements. I shoot frequently at Camp Pendleton where we are close to sea level and shoot year around, sometimes in fairly cool temperatures.

Steve Blair, any thoughts on an 8 twist for a 308 and 230's around 2400/2450fps?

Seeing positive results with the 10 twist and the 230's in my FTR but wondering if faster might help at 1000yds?

I have a 9" twist HV barrel for my F-TR gun that is not yet chambered. According to Bryan's revised stability calculator, a 9" twist will provide optimum stability under worst case conditions. No need to go faster twist than 9". My .308 230 loads are ~2460 fps from 30" with H4350. [br]

I have been working the 215 for a while now and have found them almost as accurate as my 185, my work up has been on my F-TR, I just shot a 15 shot 3 match shoot today and I am feeling the recoil. Today as I write this to you I think I am going back to the 185, I was doing this to improve my 1000 scores, however the up coming two day matches may compound the recoil fatigue and make day two less comfortable than I would like. Today during the matches the recoil was not an issue but tonight I feel it. Recoil will be the issue everyone has to deal with and for me I don't think it will be worth it. I want that BC for the wind at 1000 but I think i will just learn to call wind better....... Summary "not worth the extra recoil when compared to the 185" If you want the particulars on my work up just send me a pm I will be glad to tell you everything I found.

As Steve mentioned, i don't think a 8 twist is necessary, even for the 230s.......9 twist should work well.......They shoot well (215s @ 2560 ish and 230s @ 2440 ish) in my 9.25 twist 30 incher and i'm at sea level here.

Hi whatsthediff, were you jumping or jamming to Lands with the 215g hybrid and what was the OAL measurement from base of case to bullet tip, I have also have bartlin 32in 5groove 1 in 10 twist barrel throated for the 210g berger.

Sorry that was the 185's it was late I am old, the fps was 2655 with Varget @ 43.7 on a 32" 5R Bartlein.

2655 is still moving out pretty good for a 215.......Im only running them 2560-2570 but im running a 30 inch barrel and a faster twist, when i tried to hit the next node up i was getting pressure signs.
