215 gr Match Hybrid Target

Tried 4 loadings with the 215g hybrid starting with 43.7 upto 44.6 with varget at 20 thou off, All groups were more or less clover leaf sized groups at 120y, will be shooting the 44.30g load at 1000y on saturday hoping vert woint be too much of an issue, all groups were shot with Light sholder to stock contact and light cheek contact also i kept rifle setup as low as possible.

I was working on the 215hb in an non-optimum barrel, I got good results at 100 yards during development but ran into vertical at 300 yards. I will probably give them another go with a barrel setup to shoot the bullet. Below is my development result using Varget.

That seems like a ton of powder behind 215!

What velocity were you getting?

Will chrono at weekend, No pressure signs or hard bolt lift etc with my rifle or Palma brass will be running with lighter 43.7g load for summer and will see how 44.3 and 44.6g does at 1000y for cooler winter temps.

Cronyd the 44.6g varget load and was surprised to only see 2,496 fps with my 32in barrel however shot vert well at 1000y and held the 5 ring along with a nice few v bulls over the 185g juggernaut loads i was also shooting which dropped to 4 ring from 5 on quite a few occasions.

What FPS range are .308 FTR shooters aiming for with the 215g Hybrid for shooting 1000y distances
Is there any proven high FPS node accuracy Loads with varget and Palma brass with this bullet.

When I was trying the 215's in my 10 twist shillen, I was trying for 2500. I had the barrel throated very long and was using 44.3 g of Varget if memory serves me right. I could not eliminate the horizontal stringing. I tried the 185 Jugs and wow! They are barely in my case, but they are so easy to shoot consistently. Now reading the wind consistently is a different story! I got to shoot very little this year but did move up a class!

Hi broncman, also noticed horizontal stringing but at 2700fps ranges, shot very well withinn 2,500-2630fps range but groups started to open up with Horizontal when VL increased from 2,630fps, 185g Jugs shot well even with large jump to lands however the 215g held 5s and vbulls far better in the wind.

paulT,
Your rifle is telling you it doesn't like to be "pushed". Work up loads in the 2500-2630 fps range and see what you get. What you are doing is finding the velocity node the rifle likes in the velocity you need to get out to 1000yds so the bullet leaves the muzzle at the same point of barrel flex every time. Another thing with the 32 in barrels is that a good follow through is key because of bullet time in the barrel. This is especially true for sling shooters. Every rifle is unique in its seating and velocity accuracy nodes so testing must be done to get the best out of your rifle. What works for one man works in HIS/HER rifle so take that information with a grain of salt before you try to apply it to your rifle. The biggest jump in accuracy will be when you get adept at reading the wind (see broncmans post). The equipment and load can only do so much. Its us "loose nuts behind the butt plate" that need to raise our skills to get where we want to be. And that only comes through GOOD practice.

Try them .010 off the lands with 42.9-43.5 grains of Varget in that Palma brass and 450 primers. Should get you about 2600 and be in the middle of a node.
