210 VLD in 308 Winchester

I use both 210 SMK's and Berger 210 VLD's in .308
I shoot match rifle in the UK, this is shot at 1000/1100/1200 yards so is on the edge for the .308.
Hence you need to shoot high BC bullets fast to keep them supersonic at 1200 yards.
My .308 is throated very long to take these bullets seated well out to increase powder capacity.
Powder of choice is Vithavouri N550 we use very stiff charges behind these bullets and acheive 2700-2750 fps out of 32"-34" barrels with a 1 in 10 twist.
Cheers

would like to add to dave's post.

you BEST USE A VERY STRONG ACTION. cause you might very well be way over 50,000 psi chamber pressure!

FWIW

i shot bisley [match and tr] in 2000. used 190 smk - 44.6 gr varget. got 2790 out of 32" krieger.

load was later check at WESTERN POWDER lab- 72,00 psi!! was shooting a 4 LUG rpa 2000! that pressure would 'benb' rem/win.

SEMPER FI RON

AM NOW USING 30-06, 210 SMK, H4831SC - 2713 - SD 2

My match rifle is built on a Barnard P action which is immensley strong.
I shoot naked bullets.
As far as a safe starting point I wouldn't want to guestimate as throat length and seating depth is critcal sorry.
Cheers
Dave

you can push the 210gn bergers with R17 @ 46-48gn safely.in my 5R I am able to shoot the 208gn A-max with 47.5gn of R17 @2500fps.and I am getting just a good old flattened out primer.but @ 48gn's I was getting more pressure than I wanted.my barrel is all so 24" long.but a friend of mine that had his 308 built to shoot the 208gn A-max shoots 48gn's of R17 and was able to get up too 50gn's.but choose the 48gn load for his load.his barrel is 28" long getting just a good old flattened out primer with no other pressusre signs.

hope this helped ya.

careful w/ R17. I found blanked primers w/ a 1/2 grain bump in charge, from 47.5 to 48. I'd start low, and work up.

And just why is that? I was able to get nearly 2400fps from my Stevens 200 in .308 with a 210gr SMK without any pressure signs, so why could you not make effective use of the 210gr Berger VLD if the rifle has a barrel long enough to gain a bit more velocity?

You need to change caliber to shoot that bullet!

In the UK and some British Commonwealth countries, we have a small but select band of Match Rifle shooters who shoot the .308W at 1,000, 1,100, and 1,200yd here in Britain and up to 1,500yd in Australia.

Traditionally, shooters used the 190, 200, or 220gn Sierra MK, but around half of the British contingent now load the 208 A-Max or 210s from Sierra and Berger. They use some hefty loads and barrels are chambered-throated really long to accomodate these bullets. MVs would surprise (frighten?) a lot of people.

When the UK team visited Australia last winter (local summer down under), the markers reported the 210gn Sierras were still supersonic (from the 'crack') at 1,500yd on a range whose name I can't spell / pronounce (Coonabrabarran or something like that) in New South Wales which is situated 1,700 ft ASL, and I presume was hot during the match.

There is at least one F-TR shooter in the GB-FCA League who uses 210s successfully too. (He was second F-TR in League Round 6 last weekend.)

Keep it up!! You'll eventually find out WHY!!!
