Has anybody successfully diy’ed a motor to their lathe. I am in the market for one, But there new motorized one is almost 500 more dollars, and I want to see you if it can be done diy

You thx

Hi Dan;
I have different motor drives that i use, and i don't know anyone that has DIY on that unit. Saw a video of the motorized version and was ALMOST impressed. The only thing i did not like was the motor and cutter appeared to be off center. If you attempt this take into consideration how critical that will be to a concentric cut.

I have never used a 21 century lathe yet. Was about to buy. If I do just use a drill, Will it be hard to keep the brass concentric? Or is it gonna wobble?

I guess the other question I have is, has anybody ever bought the harbor freight mini lathe and used that?

It's not a wobble, The drill and cutter appear to be off center. Without having the case that was cut in hand for a measurement i could not tell if it was not concentric. You see the pop up adds on these pages. Click on the one for 21 Century and find the video for the motorized cutter. Notice that the cutter and motor are off center when the case is placed on the mandrel.

Slow speed high torque motors like a variable drill are generally pretty expensive and hard to find. I've looked for them for my annealer.

Yes....I made my own case turning lathe using a right angle gear motor, 170 RPM/ 1/8hp AC. IIRC it was north of $250 for the motor and capacitor. All said and done it would have been cheaper to buy a motorized 21st Century. But...that has been a recurring pattern in my life...hmmmm.

Hi, This is the powered neck turning lathe in question...http://www.xxicsi.com/powered-neck-turning-lathe2.html
There is NOT any misalignment Issues. The motor spindle and the arbor center/line are the same in both axis .The shell-holder is on a ball joint, allowing alignment from the case head to the case mouth on the turning arbor..John
Hi John;
I was not aware that there was a Ball Joint involved. It may be beneficial for you to state that in the video so someone like me does not make an ASSumption like that in the future. How do the cases measure ? What is the RPM on that motor ?

Hi Class Cat,
Easily held plus or minus .0001 ( 1/10th of a thousandths).
The finish rivals our CNC finishes. If set up & operated correctly.
RPM 300.
We also offer Other models for cheytac & 50ca., 100rpm to 200rpm. John

Hi John; Thanks for your response.
Do you have different chucks available ? IE: PPC , 300WSM, or are they generic ?
I am pretty comfortable where i am now, but i like the speed of your unit. It takes me about 6 minutes to cut and prep 1 case, but i do achieve the same tolerances as you.

I purchased one of Johns 50 caliber Lathes back when they first came out to turn 50 BMG & BMG Improved brass as well as 416 Barrett.
The Lathe is a very precision method to accomplish the neck turning on these big cases. - I use a Milwaukee battery powered driver that will run 0-400 RPM and has a lot of torque to offer. - The biggest thing I found to keep in mind is to Not take to much of a cut at one time. I've found that multiple passes may be required depending on the starting thickness & where your trying to end up.

I have built a DIY bearing tracked motor unit that is perfectly lined up and works perfect with the 21st Turning lathe. The parts are about 100.00 total, if that, including the motor. Harbor freight and EBay online order for the sealed bearing track required. The motor is on track and glides easily in same plane as the shaft to the lathe. I will post photos and details when I can(my retired neighbor loves it and trims my 223 and 6mm PPC for me on it in addn to his! I have to go get it from him to take photos).

I would like to see this. Plus its great that you get someone else to do your cases!:D How great is that.:):p

Dan. This is what I put together with an RCBS case trimmer motor that I bought from Midsouth back in 2013. Not that hard to set up and works like a charm.
