20vartarg, 222 or 22ppc?

Hi,
If you had a single shot receiver that could be any of these three, which would you choose and why? Mainly punching paper, very rarely used for varmints.
Thanks,
Ken

What distances?

For shorter distances it would be a toss up between the vartarg and 222 for me.

Less powder, longer barrel life and less recoil are the main reasons even though the recoil for ppc wouldn't be much more. Brass would probably be easier to come by for the vartarg and 222..

222; and you can still find factory ammo if need be. That was my choice for those distances, though an old 788 instead of single shot.

Boy, that's a tough one. You could reason the VT would be as accurate as a good 222, but it will get you where you want to be with less powder, recoil although minimal in either caliber, will be even less with the VT, as would the muzzle blast, also minimal in either, but less in the Vartarg. Barrel life would be good in either too. My VT has just over 4,200 rounds downrange, and it still shoots in the .2's (Cooper M38 VR)

Brass cost for either would run about the same, and as long as you don't mind a couple of forming steps and spec out your new chamber for "no-turn" necks, the Vartarg would be as easy to load for. Advantage goes to the 222 of course, in regard to factory available brass though.

I've got a No.1V in 223 with the Canjar single set trigger that shoots very well, but I've got four other 223's and one VT, so I'm strongly considering making it into a 20VT just for fun. That's 'sorta what we do, right? :D

Since you included a 22PPC, you don't seem to have a problem with a PPC type boltface. So I'll add one better to the list, 220 Beggs. It has the accuracy of a 22 PPC and will consistently beat the other two. It requires little to no fire forming and is a very efficient case. 26.0 grs of LT 32 behind a 53 gr match bullet will consistently shoot one holes groups.

very rarely on varmints, for punching paper. Simple. 22PPC USA.

Switch the sentence to varmints, then 20VT or 222, then PPC no turn

The .222 Rem is a proven paper puncher. Of the chamberings you list, it would be an easy choice. And it's no slouch on varmints.

Thanks for the replies, got a little busy...would your metrics change if I wanted to keep the furs of the varmints I would eventually be after?
Thanks again,
Ken

Not familiar with the 20 cal bullets that are fur friendly. So can't answer the vartarg thing. I guess you could simply tailor your loads to a bullet that works for the animal sought. fur friendly means different things. A bullet that works on a coyote may turn a fox or cat inside out. A bullet that swats a cat and leaves pencil lead holes in and out on a cat might make a yote look at the spot and think "dang big flea" just bit him while he slinks off to die a mile down the road. Philosophy and target animial matters. some guys think 17 when they think fur friendly. Some want in and out small. Others want in and explode, no hole out. Others want it to go into vitals on a bigger animal, and on a small one that means a frisbee sized hole on the other side.

Maybe some fur guys will chime in but for me, all I cared is that what was left laid right there when/after the bullet hit. Never cared if it was one piece or several.

got to go with the 20vartarg. mine is superb. for that range it's perfect. I have a 222 also love it too but for pure fun and accuracy and less powder consumption i love my 20 vartarg

The .222 is hard to beat. 40 grain plastic tipped bullets with the right powders have made it a whole new cartridge in the field, and match bullets in the 50.53 grain range have always shown excellent accuracy at the range. I have two, a tight necked full house bench rifle, and a factory sporter that is my favorite squirrel rifle. Your bullet selection is large, and the pedigree is indisputable.

When you throw in the 300 yard option and live varmints, I think the 22 PPC with a 12 twist is a no brainer over the other two. The 22 PPC can rival the 22/250 in velocity and knockdown power while still winning the club match and bringing home the wood!

Well there you go. Pick an one of them and you got a fan club!

Lol, that's what I got out of it. I'm wanting to build a small caliber varminter/trainer rifle for my girls and was watching this thread and am still at square one. I've been a fan of the ppc but feel like a traitor for not building a .222 yet. . decisions, decisions:)

OMG spud! Since you have TWO tater tots, build a 222 for the older one, a 22PPC for the younger one and if you have another, well, VT!

No one should be without a 222
