20Tac questions

Ok fellas, I have read about all there is read on here about the 20Tac, I even ran a google search and I still have not found an answer?

So here I go, I am building a 20Tac barrel for my Encore with a 1-9" and I would like to be in the mid 3K fps. range with 50gr. Bergers VLD's.

Now I know that this probably a little much to ask for but that is my goal. My plan was if that didn't work then I would go to the 40gr Bergers and I know that high 3K fps would be fairly easy to accomplish.

However, in order to shoot the 50gr. Bergers I am thinking I would need the 1-9" twist, from what I have been reading I need a 1-12" twist to shoot the 40gr's.? Does anyone have a 1-9" barrel and shoot the 40grs. bullets? Is there a happy medium for these two weights pf bullets? Maybe 1-10" twist?

Thanks, all comments are welcome.

kapac.
for bullets up to 40gn you want 1-12 twist for 50gnyou want 1-9.i have a tact 20 shoots like a lazer.better still is the practical 20
same twist rates velocity but no forming die needed.
look on the featured gun section theres a good write up on the practical 20 by warren b its week 61 ithink.
good luck garyw

gary thanks for the response, but like I said, I have read all I can read and have read Warren's article as well. So I guess its either 50grs. or 40 gr. bullets and nothing in between? What a shame?

PS: you know if I was shooting a bolt gun I would just stay with the 50gr bullets and the 1-9" twist. Since I can not push a bullet as fats in an Encore I thought I would have some flexibility. I was really hoping someone would say that the 1-10" would be the place to be and it would work? Wishfull thinking on my part.

If anyone else has anything to add please do so

Kapac,

I guess it depends on the use, do you need a 50 grain bullet that has an inferior trajectory compared to the 39-40 grain bullets out of a 20Tac? The 50 Berger is an accurate bullet but the BC is such that a 39 grain Sierra BlizKing will out perform it in velocity, bullet drop, wind drift and expansion on varmints. If I had to use the 50gr. in a 20Tac I would use a 9" twist but remember that velocity will suffer with lighter bullets, and maybe accuracy). I've only had one 9" twist and well over a dozen 11" and 12" twist. My vote is for the 1 in 12" unless you want to shoot the 40gr Hornady then I'd get a 1 in 11" twist but even some 1 in 9" won't shoot the 40gr Hornaday. The 45 grain Hornady will shoot out of a 1 in 12" twist but is a short range bullet with less accuracy then the 32's and 40's. Berger is developing a 55grain 20 cal. bullet but I don't know the BC or the twist required.
