20BR lets talk!!! LOL!!!

I see a lot of interest in the 55 grain Berger for the 20BR.
Am interested in what are the best powders for this bullet and this case?
Have tried RL 15 and N540 so far and have about 3550 fps, with these powders.
Are there better powders?

I'm shooting Ramshot Big Game in my 20 Dasher with the 50's Something tells me it would work nicely in the 20 BR as well.

This past summer I built 2, 20BR's, one for me and one for a buddy. They are built on Savage Target actions, mine a left port/right bolt, and my buddies is a duel port/right bolt. Both have Pac-Nor S/S 26", 3 groove, 1:12 twist, #7 contour, super match barrels. Both have Richards stocks.

Since I had several hundred pieces of brand new 7mm BR Remington brass left over from a 22BR build several years ago, we decided to use that brass, in leu of new 6mm BR Lapua brass. We started working loads with 40gr Hornady V-Maxs and since I have 24 pounds of BLC2 powder on the shelf, we started of with that powder. We started at 29.0gr of BLC2 and worked up to 35.0gr. To our suprise and delight, both rifles loved 34.5gr of BLC2 and the 40gr V-Maxs. Both rifles shoot that combo into high .100 to low .200 groups at 100yds and around .8" to 1.2" at 300yds, depending on wind. Both loads for each rifle are interchangeable, which is a plus since we shoot and hunt alot together. Velocties are pretty close as well, just 14FPS apart average, at 4,128 and 4,142 FPS. This load is fast, as it almost an instantaneous "ding" when shooting 6" square hanging steel plates at 400yds and I like not having to make any "click come ups" or take the cross hairs off the plates at 400yds.

Longest shot so far is a 462yd kill on a groundhog. Out to 300yds, it desinagrates a groundhog's head. I have shot crows and foxes as well and it does the job real well on them also. I love to see the pooooof of feathers when I explode a crow. To sum it up, anything under 400yds is a dead critter, if I get the crosshairs on it. The 20BR is a varmit hunters dream rifle.

I use Wilson 22BR in-line dies, with a .231" neck size bushing. I had to make a new 20 cal decapping rod for it and a 20 cal bullet seater rod. My buddy uses Redding 20BR dies, with a .231" neck sizer bushing.

I have not shot many crows with mine but those I have tend to have been drilled rather than exploded. Thats with 50gr berger expanding varmint bullets.

I have kinda put this hole idea on the back burner for a while as i am not getting to go prairie dog shooting this year. Canada fishing trip got the most votes. Anyway i am going to do this 20cal thing but now i am thinking about a no turn 20ppc. anyone shooting a 20ppc? Why would the 20ppc be any better than the 20BR or visa versa? Lee

As far as shooting 55s the 20br wins hands down ballistically.I am not sure the 20ppc is any better than a 20tac or 204R shooting 40s but I will probably have one soon. I finally got my Savage 20br to shoot the 55s in the .2s with 30.2 re15 seated at the lands.

What about seating dies? I dont see any for sale at sinclairs unless you buy the hole set of redding comp dies. Lee

The Hornady new generation seating die in 20cal will work on most cases. It is only caliber specific.I just got set up with the Vickerman bullet seater (the original window above the lock ring seater that RCBS sells in their comp die.Makes handlingdant seating operations much easier, especially the tinys. http://www.gmwvickerman.com/

Now i am thinking about necking down the 220 russian case to 20cal with a no turn neck. I may even name the case after myself. I think it would be extremely accurate and plenty fast. how about i call it the 20skeet?? lol I think i just might do it!! Lee

I'm getting great results with 55 gr. Bergers and 28.4 gr. of TAC in my 26" 9 twist 20 BR. 3 shot groups at 100 yds. are in the 0.2's and velocity is 3400 fps. I can't wait to try this out on some long range pdogs later this month.

30.1 gr. of RL15 gave excellent accuracy and velocity but I was beginning to have problems with pierced primers (205M).

Let's keep this thread going! I would like to see more of your experiences with other powders .

I believe the fellows over on www.saubier.com have been shooting 20PPC, with or without tightnecks, for several years. Jim Saubier has a really good shooting rear grip XP-100 in 20PPC. I just finished one with a sleeved XP-100 action, 1.250 untapered Lilja 9 twist, in a Lee Six 1K stock.

I have just had a play with 39GR SBKs at about 3600 on foxes and crows, devastating results, far more destructive than the 50gr Berger MEF. Not quite as accurate but perfectly acceptable as a hunting round.

Hey guys I'm thinking about a 20 practical vs a 20 BR for prairie dogs, planning on shooting the 40 grain vmaxs.

Any idea what the recoil is like as far as being able to spot hits with the 20 BR? I can spot hits with my 223, but the 22-250 its a no go. And the 20 BR shoots the same wieght bullet about the same speed as a 22-250 so I'm thinking apples to apples assumming the guns wiegh the same they would recoil the same.

Any thoughts?

I say you will be able to spot hits with the 20P but probably not with the 20 BR. I can't spot hits with my 16 lb 4 oz 20 Dasher.
Have you given the 20 PPC a look?

I guess I am going to just try a 20Practical and see how I like it. What I'm ganna do is order a Shilen Barrel from Northlander Shooters Supply, and screw it on my savage model 12 FV that I have in a Stockade Coyote Stalker stock. Give that a try next p-dog trip and see. I'll be taking the 6BR along for the long shots so maybe I'll have the best of both worlds!

Oh by the way I whacked a p-dog at 705 yards this year with a 105 amax out of the 6mmbr! Still had enough go to flip it up a little too! Not as much as it did at 450, through one about 5 feet in the air at 450 yards!

My hope is the 20 practical will give similar results as a 22-250 out to 400 yards but be able to spot hits better, oh yeah and have a little less kick too!

My 20Br is just over 14lbs plus scope. I see my hits fine.

What do you guys think of the 20cal bullets on coyotes? I dont think they do the job very well, at least out of a 204 ruger. Maybe the 20BR would get it done. I had about 7 run off with that 204 ruger out of 23 dogs. Lee

I've never had a dog run off after be hit properly. the .20's have more than enough, I've hit them from 17 caliber's on up. even a .17 AH anchored one at inside 125 yards.

I have heard mixed results of the .20's effectiveness on coyotes. Some say it's exceptional, others say it's marginal. One of the guys I hunt deer with tried a .204 ruger and had good luck with it, but went back to his .243 because he had more confidence in it and had passed several shots with the 204.

I see no reason why it won't work if you are cautious not to take questionable shots. My little brother killed a coyote (dropped on the spot) out the bathroom window at our hunting camp with my 17HMR and a 50 yard heart shot, so good shots with a smallbore are very possible if you are given a good opportunity.
