204 Ruger

What are you guys with the 204 getting for oal with 39gr. sierra's seated ten thousands off the lands. mine is 2.469 oal I think this is a little to long. the gun is a CZ 527 varmint.

P8; I have a Remington 700 Light Varmint Stainless Fluted. With my Sinclair gauge I get 2.447" max OAL for the 39gr Sierra BK. My problem is that the max mag length allowable is 2.300". It does seem to be shooting okay with the .147" jump. 1/2" to 5/8" or so with the factory gun, three shots @ 100yds. I did install a Jewell trigger.

I have a rem 700 also and Im going to try and grind the spacer off the back of the mag this will free up another .4 of space. I'll prob have to put a .243 or .308 follower in it to take up the extra space. This will give more than enough room to run the bullets out as far as needed.

possium8: I agree with jo191145. My original throat had zero freebore, requiring everything seated to touch. Opened up the throat to .070" freebore, giving them .030" of jump, and groups are noticeably smaller and more consistant. Some rounds seem to do better with jump, and this may be one of them. IMO.

do you think a .03 jump is best, better than anything else)? I too have a rem 700 and bore is at 2.46. I was loading at 2.37 with no pressure signs,27 benchmark, 39 grn SBK). Can/should I go out to 2.40? 2.41? 2.42? I assume that if I go too far that I will also increase pressure... is that correct?

WES: I don't know if you're addressing your .03" jump response to me or not, but on the chance you are: I just selected .030" as a "midway" starting point, since I had been seating to touch, with little success, and I would not want to jump more than .050", so .030" is close to "in-between". When we get some breaks in the weather, and less wind, I'll also try .040" and .050" off the lands, using the identical loads. As you approach the bullet seating depth to the point where increasing pressure becomes a problem, you'll have some warnings: hard bolt lift after firing, flattened, cratered primers, a lot of case stretching, etc. With all that being said, you must decide what seating depth works best for your load and rifle.
