204 ruger primers

I always used Remington 7 1/2 primers. I have some Federal 205 match primers. Is Federal any better than Remington? Also have a pd of N530 powder to try. I normally use H4895 and RL10. With a Berger 35gr bullet. Planning on trying Berger 40gr 40gr V max and Nosler 40gr with the N530. My rifle is a TC Venture predator model. It has a 1@10 twist 22 inch bull flutted barrel. Just wanted see how the N530 V max and Nosler bt. Will shoot out of my gun. Only bullets I have shot so far are 35gr bullets. My other 204 ruger i shot 39gr out of it.

I think you will like the 40 vmax and since you have the 10 twist it should work well in it. The Fed 205M primer is a great one and the N530 is very close to H4895 in burn rate. The Rem primers hold up well too.
The 204 is a darling you cant go to far wrong with it. If you have a chronograph try both and see which one is more consistent. I bet the Rem will do well during this cold spell too.

FWIW, my understanding is that N530 has been discontinued. I have a few pounds of it and loved using it with my 40gr 223 loads. I also use it in my 6.5 Grendel for my deer loads. I've stopped loading it in 223 so that I can save what I have left for the Grendel.

If you use CCI400's you take a very good chance of piercing primers in anything other than hornet sized cases or run mild loads, I learned my lesson years ago with 6.5 Rem primers

I usually use 7-1/2. But not all primers in SM are equal. The CCI #41 have thick cups. They are my preference, but spendy.

I’ve considered the 41’s. Have you seen a confirmation on the cup thickness? I’ve looked and can’t find it. Seems we all agree on the thicker cups but where can I find what the actual number is?

No but I heard they are a bit thicker.
AI says"CCI #41 small rifle primers feature a cup thickness of approximately .0255 inches. These primers are specially engineered for 5.56mm NATO applications with a harder, thicker cup and a shorter anvil, designed to meet military specifications and reduce the risk of slam-fires in AR-15/M16 platform rifles. "
I also found this article on Reddit reloading. According to it he #41 is pretty much like a 450. Link below

Literally have shot tens of thousands of 400's in many chamberings. Never had a pierced primer.

You surely aren't using them in a 204 at top end loads ive used 400's to but not in anything larger than a hornet case but carry on

CCI400's are regular small rifle primers and not the same as rem 6.5's which have a warning not to use in hi pressure cartridges.
They are the exact same thickness as 6.5 .020 but if you insist have at it.
400's are basically nothing more than a 550M pistol primer.

There are those that have not pierced a 400 primer in a rifle cartridge……..yet.
Had some full tilt 204 and 223’s loaded, had to put them in a cooler on ice to get rid of them. 71/2 or 450’s since then.
Getting caught up on prairie dog ammo supply, been using up old inventory. Now to get all of that loaded back up, 5-6k and all with 71/2’s. Ain’t worth driving across the state and have faulty gear.

I have used 7 1/2s, 400s, win srp and fgmm. All in temps from 98° down to 15°. They all work, but at the top end, in the heat, I like the 7 1/2s and 400s.

I intentionally use 400’s in my 204. With a bushed firing pin I’ve never pierced a primer. My load is a very safe 3850 FPS with 40’s in a 26” barrel. The 400’s are my canary in the coal mine in the poodle fields. I watch the fired primers and when flattening starts I know the chamber is getting hot enough to raise pressures. Then it’s time to switch off to another rifle. Maybe illogical but it works for me.
