.204 Ruger Factory Ammo -- Cheaper than Reloads?

All that matters is whether you are satisfied with the transaction and hits...

My own reasons:
- Prefer to roll my own.
- Never had purchased ammo perform as well as my handloads.
- Most purchased ammo does not repeat very well from lot to lot.
- Find most purchased ammo to be expensive and over priced.

Will end with a question, why not reload?

Looks to me thats about .55 cents around. How good does it shot? 3 inch @100yds.? 1inch @ 100? If you're happy good. Some of us want better than that.Usually " better" does not happen with factory ammo. I spend more than .55cent for the bullet(projectile)for some hunting rounds. If you are happy thats all that matters. Have a nice day hear. PS Thats why I reload.

A friend I have been mentoring has gotten his .204 to shooting some bug holes at 100 yards. Impressive to me, with such a light bullet. His 200 meter groups are very respectable also. Reloads, tailored to his rifle. A stock Cooper with a trigger that feels like a 6-8 lb pull. Not a target trigger.

Here are a few reasons why I reload: 1.) I can use the BULLET I want, which in many cases is simply not available in factory ammunition; 2.) I can get the freebore I want to use that bullet I want; 3.) I can normally generate higher velocity than factory ammo because I can choose powders that somehow create velocity; 4.) I can "fine-tune" my loads to extract all the accuracy I can muster out of a cartridge / barrel combo; 5.) I can use many "wildcats" (that are my mainstay in cartridge selection) that are never available over the counter.. These are my main points why I reload..
One other thing I failed to mention: I spend A LOT of time prepping virgin brass to make brass that is VASTLY superior to anything coming out of a factory..

Every gun I own has shot 100% tighter groups when I tailor a load for it. Well, except that darn Browning xbolt 223. That one's a dog. That said, I do like a good deal on some factory ammo. I bought a bunch of 308 for 50 cents a round, years ago. I also loaded up on 223 before all the hoarding started. It all depends on what you expect out of it. I try to get people into shooting by taking them to the range, while supplying guns and ammo. They just have to have fun and hit the target;)

I should've tittled my post differently I've been a hand loader for nearly 40 years and always will reload.( I already bought a box of that stuff off the shelf at Sportsmen warehouse and it was under 1/2 MOA out of my new CZ-527) When I found that same stuff for a greatly reduced price ,I couldn't resist . Now I'll have an additional 300 fire formed brass also. So I thought I'd pass that price on .

must admit i don't reload for my grendel AR. only use it for hog hunting and it shoots factory SST good enough for that. don't want to be picking up brass anyway.

Besides all of the obvious reasons, I like to reload because I love to take something that works good and make it work great. I get a new interest and then it seems to get a hold of me and I become obsessed. I read and ask questions and experiment and unfortunately, as soon as I get very good at it, I lose interest in it, get interested in something else and off I go again. It never ends, it can get expensive and most women can't understand it but it just feels right!!!

I bet I just described most people on this forum. :) Add some new friends to it also and it just makes life fun. Enjoy your day!!!

Because:
- I can.
- I like recycling brass
- I get my ammunition more accurate than factory ammo
- I can create loads even for the .45/70 that are soft enough for the kids to shoot or stout enough to shut up the "I shoot it all without a problem" guys...
- I get the cheapest plinking ammo when using my cast bullets or mil-surplus bullets. Not as accurate, but when cycling 600+ rounds a minute, 1/2 or 3 moa accuracy at 100 yards really does not matter. Spending only about 1/3 of the money compared to factory ammo does matter though...
- I get something else to tinker with
- I get my own space and personal time in while doing something I enjoy

Nothing wrong though with buying all the factory ammo! Once fired brass has to come from somewhere ;-)

I HATE reloading!!! But I do it to save money - 40% to 60% without looking for special ammo sales that are never there when I need them. Much better accuracy and cartridges or bullets that are not available from factories.
