204 Powder

I've got a new Savage 12 single shot with the 26" heavy barrel and 1,000 40 grain V-Maxes. What powder should I start out with? I was thinking of trying AA2520 becuase it of velocity it showed in the Hornady manual. Thanks.

My XR-100 shot the V-max bullets fairly well with Re-15, but it really shines with 24.3 gr. of IMR 3031 behind Sierra 39 gr. blitzkings. It will do .5 at 100 yards all day. Can't say what your rifle will like, but those two are my suggestions.

Hope it helps.

Another vote for Benchmark. I've tried 32 and 40 V-Max and 35gr Bergers in mine. Benchmark did better than 335, 748 and H4895 for all bullets. Have not tried any 10X.

I've been shooting the 39gr Sierra Blitzking and 27.7grs of H4895 in my Kimber Pro Varmint. Out of the 22 inch tube, that load has given me 5 shot groups between 1/4 & 1/2 MOA at an average velocity of 3873 fps, which is phenominal velocity for such a short tube - must be a fast barrel.

However, 2 weeks ago I was at the range and tried 5 rounds at 28grs. Couldn't measure the velocity, but the group was even tighter still, so next week I have an opportunity to try this load again, and over my chronograph.
