.204,or similar) question

I have been shooting a 22-250 for all my varmint needs and it is great. However, it is as loud as a 30-06. I was wondering for some of you guys that have all calibers,22-250, .223, .204, .17 rem, etc.) would a .204 have much less report than the 22-250? Which from the above list makes the least amount of noise? I shoot an encore a lot so picking up a new caliber is not a big deal, I just want to make sure the one I add to the collection is quiet.

Basically what I am looking for is inherent accuracy and as mild a report as possible.

The 22BR is the one I love to shoot. It will almost keep up with a 22-250 with milder report and less kick. The 204 Ruger is a power house and it is loud to me. There are other 204's that I am sure have a milder report,204 var-tar).

Have over 400 rds thru a newly built 204 now, and sure cannot tell any difference in noise level between it and any of my 223s': to me, just as loud.

My neighbor described the sound of my 204 going off as sounding like "The gates of hell slamming shut":)

The potent 20 cals deliver a pretty loud crack to the unprotected ear.

I was at this same stage 11-12 years ago shooting two 22-250's. I had my first subcaliber,17 Mach4) built and never looked back.

The .204 won't be as bad, but it is still loud and the 17 Mach4 won't be as quiet as the 22 hornet. Although I have shot some relatively quieter loads out of my 17 Mach4 using 4.5-5 grains of pistol powder under 15-18 grain bullets. Only 5 grains of powder out of a 25" barrel is much quieter. Also, I've shot some slower/quieter loads out of the 17 Mach4 using around 15.0 grains of H4198.

If you are willing to wildcat and the range is under 225 yds or so, a good compromise would be a 17 Ackley Hornet.

The main thing if you want to get the noise down, you will need to get the powder charges down.

The 204 32 grainers leave the muzzle at just under mach 4. It is loud... very loud. It IS very pleasant to shoot with more "Vibration" than recoil. Good for watching critters blow up real good in the scope at 25 power.
