2020-21 fclass nationals

Doesn't have to be in September. Last time they were in Phoenix, weren't they in October? I think I remember Halloween being during the Nationals.

Man, that would be a great idea ANYWAY. September is right after school starts everywhere. Hard time to get away for a week...

Shot at Atterbury for the first time in late Oct. for their monthly Long-Range (Sat) and Mid-Range matches (Sun). Had a good time and the matches were well run. We shot onto electronic targets (SMT) and I do not recall an impact berm when we put them away. If I understood things, there were multiple on-base ranges than allowed 1000 yds and we were on one berm that could accommodate about 20ish points. The 1000-yd shooting berm was quite steep to ascend while the 600 yd berm was pretty "normal". I believe I heard that 100+ targets points are available across all of the 1000-yd berms. The on-base housing was inexpensive and super-convenient, esp since we had to pause the match and come back to shoot when Trump's flyover closed down the shooting on base unexpectedly mid-match. The wind that weekend was stronger that any I have experienced at Ben Avery, Raton or Lodi (disclaimer: I did not shoot the 2018 BSWN 600-yd match which I have been told was horrific and have only 4-days of shooting at each BA and Raton, but 25+ at Lodi).

As compared to my (limited) experience shooting at Ben Avery, Raton, and Lodi, it would be unlike any of these venues, all things considered. This is not meant to be a biased statement one-way-or-another, rather an observation.

Edit: Would I attend FCN if it were held at Atterbury? Absolutely! It was a good experience with good people. Drew

I've not shot at Atterbury yet. I'm not surprised at all by this speculation. I've heard a little and looking at the tea leaves (or spilled powder) I've been sort of expecting it since they got the NRA HP Nationals that used to be at Camp Perry a couple of yrs ago.

It's a whole lot closer than Phoenix for everyone in the east. I've not been to a FCNC other than PHX or Raton (I skipped ET beta testing at Lodi). It would surely be fun.

A couple more questions for those that know about Camp Atterbury. How many firing positions is there and is there a berm to shoot into? I have yet to shoot at a military base that had a berm. Target service really suffers because of that.

Atterbury...
Does not have impact berms.

If the F-Class Nationals come to Atterbury it will not be shot on E-Targets.

The range that it would be shot on has I believe 40 to 50 firing points (I have not counted them) with manual carriers.

Firing points are normal points as you find at most ranges. They were just reworked for the NRA HP Nationals.

Is Atterbury a perfect range or even a great choice to hold our F-Class Nationals. In my opinion... No it's not.

But, what range is a perfect choice?

Atterbury is a fun and challenging range to shoot.

Before we discount Atterbury, let's think about how many different ranges around the country can and are even willing to attempt to hold this match for us in the F-Class community.

Thanks,
Mike Plunkett

They must be doing something right.......Look at their schedule. They have great accommodations on base. Rooms are 10 minutes from the range, Shawn and associates do a great job running the matches. I'll be shooting there a lot this year.
well everything but Shawn...no he really does a great job and its a thankless one at that

Thanks for the reply Mike.

With only 50 firing points and no impact berm IMHO Atterbury wouldn't or shouldn't even be considered as a choice for NATIONALS. I would come closer to accepting E-targets over no berm. I hate not being able to give excellent pit service.

Having no experience with pulling targets without an impact berm but pulling when the impact zone from an x or inner 10 was in a deep mud cone with no splash made good pit service a major challenge. I do the best I can with feeling the target frame and listening carefully but I'd rather be chastised for being 'slow' on the pull and waiting to have it called for than pulling it out from under a shot because I though I heard the 'crack' over my frame. How often do shooters have to call to the pits to have a target marked at Camp Att or P ???

It's been talked about before, but as it stands today:

We know PHX works, and Raton works. Lodi worked with ETs.

Camp Perry is big enough, but it's Perry and getting the Ohio NG to run the match probably isn't happening. (and Perry has been running matches for ever with no berm)

I've heard Lejune is big enough but getting the USMC to run it is probably less likely than the Ohio NG at Perry.

As many times as I've shot there I can't remember, isn't Butner 75 or 80 targets? but parking would be a challenge. Again it's a guard base, getting the military to play along for something this big is what it is.

Where else is there? There was a set of requirements published when the NRA combined MR and LR in 2014 (I think). One thing was being able to host both MR and LR consecutively. Another was limiting the squadding to 4 relays. I know the NRA can grant an exception there, but with out it you need 100 firing points. Where else is there?

When you are looking for an impact is different that when you are looking for a shot. You usually get a stiff neck by the end of the day looking up at the target. You get tuned in to the sound of the shot on your target and you watch for the impacts or the spotter wiggle, but you do get more calls for marks.

Boy, my mother would be pissed at me for watching a target looking for an impact! "Son....don't do that....it'll put your eye out..." Of course she also did not like me participating in penny rocket wars in my youth.

I might be a little (ok, a lot) prejudiced here, but Atterbury would do fine hosting F Class nationals. I say I might be prejudiced because I'm 20 minutes from the front gate at Atterbury and primarily shoot there with CIHPRS (sling....don't judge).

Mike is correct, no impact berms, ~50 firing points IIRC. Always SOME wind, usually coming from 5-7 o'clock and switchy. Keeps you on your toes.

I've not stayed on base, but have heard nothing but good about it.

Columbus is 15-20 minutes south and has everything you'd ever need. Plenty of places to grab a bite and a beer. Indianapolis is 45 minutes north and has more than you'd need.

No decisions been made concerning Atterbury. However one consideration was to give the far east F-class shooters a better chance to attend a closer venue for the nationals. If I remember correctly there are 70 targets available out to 1000 yards. 20 on one range and 50 on another.

Butner has 50 points but only about 40 that can be used and the NCNG can bump us at the last minute or request one side of the range not to shoot (happened). Not ideal but the NCNG wouldn’t be running it.

And how many of the “far easterners” attended Nationals in Lodi? 8-15 hours is to far??
I bet more westerners traveled to Lodi than easterners and the drive or flight was longer.

Phoenix has unlimited hotels, restaurants, ammenities, close airport. Let’s also remember Ben Avery is a fabulous range/facility and plenty to do for the entire family. Obviously heat in the city itself is an issue but wondering why it has to be in September.
Gives us hometown boys a bit of an advantage....LOL :P

Using an active military base is just a bad idea. If the commandant decides he doesn't like civilians running around his base with guns, we are out. I think that's what happened to the CMP Games West. That's the story I heard. Guess where DeMille took his matches? :)
