2013 Project Rifle: 284 Win

Just received a Bartlein #3 contour 26" 7mm 1-8.4" fluted barrel. I've read quite a few posts about the 284 Win vs 7 SAUM vs 7 WSM. Not really a magnum or speed freak. Want to build a well balanced and accurate hunting rifle. Need to get a M700 long action for the build. Any tips or warnings before I have it built next summer.

Just make sure you get the right freebore for the bullets you want to shoot and don't over look Winchester brass. My freebore is 220 and I typically shoot 175gr or heavier.

I figure I'll call PT&G about the freebore. Plan to shoot 162 A max and up to the 180 hybrid. Read 0.188" is about the right freebore. Should I use an action from the 30-06 family or a belted magnum? Want to be able to magazine feed so does it make a difference? Sorry if the question is stupid, never owned a 284 win.

I'm using .187 freebore in my 7mm RSAUM and it works fine with 162s as well as 180s. Most bullets seat with just a bit of the boattail below the shoulder/neck junction

I have a 284 improved reamer .188 FB, I have built 4 guns with this setup and shot one quite a bit this summer.

Feel free to PM with any questions.

Thanks
James

I just finished my 284 hunter. I was wanting something light weight that would flat out be a "go-to" type budget rifle. I had a Winchester Long action laying around, a Remington 7mm-08 barrel (reamed out to 284) an dropped it in a B&C medalist then picked up a PTG trigger guard. It is one slick looking RemChester. Still waiting for a deer to walk out in front of it. I think the 284 is a great choice in an all around hunting rifle.

Go-to hunting rifle is what I want out of this build. Thinking of another Leupold VX6 2-12x. I have them on my stepson's Win M70 all weather extreme in 270 Win and 7mm-08.

Nothing wrong with the 284 case.....but, it is expensive and sometimes hard to find.

Might I suggest a 280 or 280 AI? Check the ballistics and decide for yourself.

Nosler has AI brass ready to go (this is Norma brass).

You cant go wrong with the Leupy. I thought about the 280 and 280 AI when I was making mine but I have a tactical rifle in 284 so having brass on hand was not an issue. If I ever go out a hunt somewhere I will probably use a more standard caliber in case I have to pick up ammo. But for me it is pretty much the rifle I pick up if I want to go trudge through the woods for a couple hours.

Considered a 280 or AI, great rounds from what I've read. The 284 Win happened to catch my interest, nothing against the 280s. Any thoughts on a Edge filled McMillan Game Scout or A-3 Sporter rifle stock?
