2012 OH groundhogs - Final Tally

Re: The pups are out - 2012 OH groundhogs

Glad you got to spend some quality time with each other!!! Yes, thank him for his service!!!

Re: The pups are out - 2012 OH groundhogs

My partner and I got out yesterday afternoon for a few hours. We got 9 in hayfields just north of where Nomad is set up shop for the summer.

Here's a pic of 4 that I piled up with the 17 Rem. in about 45 minutes. Seemed like they were out in a flurry. Nothing out before or after that. Tried some of the Woodchuck Den 30gr HPBT bullets in the 17 there yesterday and they are GREAT. Accurate, unbelievable terminal ballistics.... just unbelieveable what that lil bullet will do to a chuck. :o If you're a 17 centerfire shooter... you owe it to yourself to try em. And I thank John Meyers for putting me on to them. ;) WD

Nice job Wyle. I'd like to get a .17 in Horady Hornet, but the guns are in short supply right now, at least for what I am willing to pay. If an when I find one, I will see if the ammo you mentioned are made in .17 Hornady Hornet.

Re: 2012 OH groundhogs - no record, but another over 1000

Groundhog #307 for the season was shot at 1017 yards - my second over 1000 yards. And witnessed be James Rowe (Rodent @ Snipers Hide). Actually, we were specifically looking for long range groundhogs and James shot one at 1040 yards with his 7mmSAC just before I shot mine. Then Luke Wells (who bought my long range 243 WSSM) joined us and he also shot one at 1017. It was almost beside my dead one when he shot his. Then thunderstorms moved into the area and put a halt to any more shooting. And just when we were about to set out some golf balls at 350 yards to shoot at. :(
Pretty cool, though - 3 groundhogs totalling over 3000 yards shot by three guys with three different rifles.

I bow to your abilities as marksmen. That truly is amazing!

The 6XC strikes again. Great shooting. ;D

Re: 2012 OH groundhogs - no record, but another over 1000

Thanks Guys. Yes it was exciting and another score for the 6XC. Man, I like that cartridge.

It was actually my third shot at the groundhog that nailed him. I had windage fairly well adjusted from a previous 'test' shot at his mound of dirt which was at 1009 yards. But when he came out of his hole he was moving to my left and it appeared to be a lateral move thru the scope. My first shot was low and he kept moving left. I over corrected and the second shot sailed high. After one more adjustment, I nailed him. Upon further review (I like those words) with the naked eye and thru binoculars, you could see that the slope he was on actually angled away from us. Hence the first miss and the final yardage of 1017.

Re: 2012 OH groundhogs - no record, but another over 1000

Shot 3 early afternoon and 6 this evening. Nothing special, all were between 190 and 300 yards. Season total now stands at 331. Before today, the 'hog numbers seemed to be dwindling and I was wondering if I could match last year's total of 368.
We will be leaving Ohio in late August, so I've got one more month to shoot 37. I think I can do that. :D

Have no doubt! Working on getting back to OH before you leave.

Re: 2012 OH groundhogs - no record, but another over 1000

Looking forward to it. We'll have a blast. And we'll see how far you can stretch out your 22-250 or the new 243 if you have one by then.

Re: 2012 OH groundhogs - dog days of mid summer

Well, the 'dog days' of mid summer are here - woodchuck-wise. The soybeans are taller than a standing groundhog. And the corn is 6 feet tall, hiding a lot of fence rows, etc. So we're down to recently mowed hay fields and pastures.

I got out this morning and here is my setup. I'm parked near the top of a hillside pasture.
JerryLittleOverlook.jpg

The far right corner of the field is 714 yards. Although very few groundhogs appeared, I was satisfied. Three groundhogs with three shots, 252, 508, and 184 yards. There is a pine tree just left of the garage in about the middle of the picture. The 508 yard shot was just left of the tip of the pine tree. Then I found one just right of the pine tree and ranged at 487. The bullet landed just over it as it was feeding and it wasted no time going to ground. I had taken out 1/4 MOA to allow for warming temps and a downhill shot, but apparently that was not enough OR I just plain missed.
Those three bring my season total to 356 - 12 shy of last year's total.

Re: 2012 OH groundhogs - dog days of mid summer

Nice spot! Great shooting as always! Do you shoot over the house/garage? Should have no problem exceeding last year's count with the numbes you are putting up!!

Re: 2012 OH groundhogs - dog days of mid summer

I prefer not to shoot over the house.

I should mention that I shot there a week ago. The farmers mother lives in the house and she has a real groundhog problem. She says they move in while she is in Florida for the winter. She's got holes under her shed and garage. Anyway, I shot three out of her front yard. Two were over near her shed and not lined up with any buildings. But the third was munching on grass in front of her house (the end nearest the garage). I waited and waited for it to move from in front of her house. It finally did move, but was still in the front yard, between the house and garage. Just to be sure no bullet fragments would carry to the house, I waited for it to either face to or away from me. It finally faced directly away from me while feeding and I put a round right up its behind.
When I stopped to tell her the news, she told me she was watching it feed from her front door and hoped I saw it. She actually saw it get shot and told me she clapped her hands when she saw it. She also told me its hole was under her front porch.

Re: 2012 OH groundhogs - dog days of mid summer

Thanks, Guys.

I got 9 more this evening in a large partly mowed & baled alfalfa field. One miss at 410 yards, but 5 of the 9 I shot were over 400 yards.

Season total: 365

Re: 2012 OH groundhogs - dog days of mid summer

Here is this evening's setup.
KevinGsetup.jpg

I got three, equaling last summer's 368 total, but it took me 6 shots. The first was at 671 yards (at the up arrow in the pic) and took two shots. The second was a strange one, 603 yards (at the down arrow). The first shot appeared to just miss low, but it didn't run, just made a U-turn. So I added 3/8 MOA to the scope and fired again. This shot appeared to hit it although I didn't hear the 'whomp'. It didn't move for 3 or 4 seconds, then it began wandering around like it forgot where it's hole was. I cranked the scope up to 50 power and I could see blood on its face and it didn't appear to have a left eye. After 30 or 40 seconds of this wandering, I decided to put it out of its misery and sent a third round his direction, this time anchoring it. #368 was a ho-hum 304 yard shot off to the left of the photo.

Re: 2012 OH groundhogs - dog days of mid summer

Nice going Nomad! Your definitely going to surpass last year now!

I can only dream of ho-hum shots like that. I'm afraid those 600 + shots of yours are out of my realm of possibility!

Go for the gold!!
