20 WSSM?

Anybody ever thought about building a 20 WSSM? The case cap. I think is around 55.0gr H2O. With a 1-9 twist and some 55gr berger bullets or some custom bullets from Blackholebullets something in the 60gr range would be pretty impressive. Just an idea love my 204 and think this would be a fun rifle to shoot even though the barrel might last only about 800 or rounds so.

We talked about it quite a bit over at the wssmzone forum. EvilAmerican even went so far as to have a reamer made. But he never had a barrel chambered.
I recall running QL numbers and the round is capable of 5000 fps. Talk about overbore!

5000fps with what bullet? I am not talking about shooting a 40gr Vmax or 39gr Sierra. With the case cap. it would have to be a heavy cal bullet if your looking for fast with the 40gr might as well just build a regular 20BR or something like that. Midway has a chamber reamer 20-223 WSSM from PTG would be an easy setup on a savage target action.

... with a bolt face change.

I don't remember what the bullet weight was - it was well over two years ago when we discussed it. I agree I would want the heaviest bullet I could find.

I was talking to Greg Tannel about building a 20/250 for me and We got to talking about large capacity 20cals and he said he has been using a surpressed 20wssm shooting the 55gr Bergers at I think he said 3900 or 4000 fps with a 10 twist barrel at about 8000 ft he built it for shooting coyotes at ranges of 7-800 yards. I'm getting about 3500 from my 20br with the 55 Bergers

I have talked to greg about the 20-250 before but never ended up building one. I would think the 20-250 would be a better choice just becuase you can get better brass. Just seeing if anyone had built one before.

Two problems I see with the WSSM in 20Cal. One the bullets won't hold up to 5000fps and two the barrel life of the 223 WSSM being around 200 the 20cal will be even worse. Once the throat goes the bullets won't even make it 50ft let alone 50yds.

The WSSM is best suited in the larger calibers such as 35 and up. I mean no problem in building it but you're not going to gain anything over the 20BR.

The 20-250 has been done several times over and it's a decent round. Best suited for heavy built 40gr bullets. Google Dave Afflek 20-250. Adam

I had Kiff make me a 20-250 reamer with some rounds that I sent him. Shooting 55gr bergers with imr 4350 at 3860fps with great accuracy, and that bullet works very well on coyotes. 9 twist pac-nor

Also shoot a 20x47L with 39gr sierra's. 12 twist krieger. Barrel shows firecracking after 300 rounds. Shoots good but not consistent.

20br with 55gr bergers. 9 twist douglas. fast and shoots tiny groups consistently.

I have to agree that the wssm suffer with brass quality. The 20br and the 20-250 would be interesting to try with the heavier custom bullet?

Kyle,

What kind of velocity are you getting with the 20BR and the 55`s????

Who said the WSSM barrel life is 200? Only going to be that if you extreme push your pills but it will be no different from any other calibre. Use a WSSM with 62 gr Barnes and it chugs along at 3600 with head and neck shooting to 400m.

Kyle,

That`a haulin the mail for sure.....

What twist rate are you using for the 55`s???

I have contemplated building a .20BRX for shooting yotes and HOPEFULLY feeding from a magazine.....

I have a friend in KY. Mr. Gross, he wore out a 223WSSM in 150 give or take, this was factory ammo also. He was trying to gather up brass, once he shot them all he scoped the bore and found well over a .25" of throat gone. Needless to say neither he or I don't own a WSSM anymore. Adam

I'm not trying to talk you out of it, or into it. I am just saying don't expect much from it. The 20x47 would be a viable option with the same results. As would the 20-250, but it's your money and hair. Adam

I will grant that the WSSMs have brass issues with their thick necks. But they are no more of a barrel burner than any other overbore cartridge shooting hot loads.
