20 Vartarg - Which Bullet: 32gr Vmax or 35gr Berger

Saubier Forum is down for couple of days now so I'll ask the question here and hopefully get some cross-over participants

Rifle chambered in 20 Vartarg (1:11 twist).

With the ammo shortage, its difficult to first play with both to make a decision. So going to take a leap of faith.

Which bullet: 32gr V-Max or 35gr Berger? Does your opinion change if I can buy Bergers at same price per bullet as the V-Max?

I would mentally like the 35s. Mentally in that I have yet to test either but plenty of both on the shelf. Berger would be imo, inherently more accurate from a manufacturing quality.

For pd’s I would pick the 32,for coyotes most people love the 35 Berger.
Also looking forward to the 36 Sierra if and when we get back to normal

All the shooting I do with my Cooper M38 20VT is for ground squirrels and rock chucks. That said, and being a few flaps of the crows wings from our buddies at Nosler, my two primary rat bullets are the 32gr BT and their flat-base 32gr Varmageddon. Both are wicked accurate in my rifle, and really launch the rats with a good hit.

Accuracy is totally adequate for 400+ yard squirrel shooting, and I shoot mostly factory seconds for the cost effective aspect:



If I was hunting coyotes and wanting to save pelts, then the Berger would be the first choice, but in today's market (here), it's just not worth the time, money and effort to chase yotes and the Berger's are more expensive for a day of 400+ rounds at squirrels and do not have the wanted explosive effect.

I can't tell the difference in accuracy between the BT and VG, so I shoot whatever one I've got the most of. So far, seems to be working.

Honestly, there’s a place for both and you can’t go wrong with either.I would get both personally.

I am going to be mostly punching paper. I wish I were somewhere that I could be culling crows, PD, coyotes, etc. Killing mostly trees 100-300 yards.

That's how I would go about choosing them as well. PD's and ground squirrel shootin the 32's will be more explosive and give, as Rick in Oregon often calls it, better Rat-O-Batics. The Berger 35's seem to be a "go to" bullet for many 20 cal coyote shooters.

Not sure what the deal is with Sierra's 36gr BK's they use them in their 204 Ruger loaded ammo but I've yet to see them sold as a component bullet. Hopefully they'll start selling just the bullets soon, I'd like to give them a go in my 20-222.

Keep in mind that the Nosler 32gr VG is also a flat-base bullet.

In my world I can always get the 32vmax at a very reasonable price and they perform extremely well in my prairie dog rifles.
The Sierra 32 also perform well but cost more and hard to find most of the time.

I would buy(for me) a couple hundred Berger 35's, if you can get them at vmax price. Coyote hate them, fur buyers love them.

Your 11 twist will handle 40's if you so desire. The two you mention are great, accurate bullets, but get blown around a good bit more than the 40's.

I've probably shot more 32 vmax than any other however, just because they were selling them as zmax for a heck of a good price a few years back.

I don't know how you get around this. There is no bullet I have shot in 20-caliber or any other caliber that will outshoot 32-gr VMax in my .204's, but something else might shoot best in yours.

I have a 204 ruger. I have used the 32gr varmageddons with good accuracy. I now load the 35gr bergers since im coyote hunting with it. They both shoot good.

I mostly shoot 20 Practical in 10, 11, and 12T. I shoot the 32 ZMAX on paper and almost entirely on prairie dogs. I also shoot the 20 Bobcat. In my most accurate rifles, on paper the Berger 35 gr ALWAYS shoots smaller groups.

Might look at the 34g Dogtown's from Midway, pretty cheap when they are in stock, and just as accurate as the vmax or varmageddon's in my 204R.
