20 VarTarg TK Build

031874DC-4D51-449A-BD75-6504BD209E64.jpeg
I just finished this build and I thought would share the specs;

Remington 788, the original barrel was a .223
22” Douglas 1-11 twist barrel chambered in a Todd Kindler 20 VarTarg dimensioned for Lapua brass (221 Fireball)
Harrells Brake
Timney 1.5 lb. Trigger
Boyd Stock (second grade from eBay), Bedded with Steel Bed and AL pillars.
Cerakote Vortex Bronze and Micro Slick on the bolt
I polished the striker and replaced the striker spring.
Trued the receiver face and had my local machine shop surface grind the recoil lug.

Next steps, develop a load. I have 32 gr V-Max and 35 gr Berger FB Varmint Bullets and AA2200, N120, and H335 powder to work with. Suggested loads appreciated.

Questions and comments welcomed.

Also try LT-32. It’s next to 2200 on the burn rate. I’ve had good success with it, and 2200.

Thanks guys.
I should mention Boyd Allen as he helped guide me with some of the finer points on pillar bedding the 788. For example, the rear pillar requires special attention to clear the boss on the back of the receiver, basic pillar bedding 101stuff, but still it is a little something that is unique to the 788. Here is a pic of a .223 AI build.90C7249D-C728-4079-BC8C-DE554CA259D0.png
This is one of the short comings of the 788 vs the 700, but the advantages 788 far outweigh the 700, IMHO.

RL-7 & H4198 work real well with Nosler 32gr ballistic tips, RP, sorted, neck turned, primer pockets uiformed and flash hole deburred prepped brass. Best accuracy is in the mid to upper charge limits, R 71/2 primers.

More photos!! I am thinking that is the best looking 788 I have ever seen...but need to look "more carefully" ;)

Being a sub-caliber chambering developed by the man I’d assume the “TK” would mean Todd Kindler but it sounds like you did the build yourself. What’s TK mean?
