20 Vartarg reamer print

I called JGS to ask about reamer prints for 20 Vartarg using Lapua brass. They sent me this newer one that Todd Kindler made available to the public. Anyone use this one? I was thinking about making the neck 0.235 to ensure no turn necks and changing the freebore to 0.0100 instead of the 0.0500 to accommodate 32 grain bullets.

If you have an alternative reamer print that works very well with LAPUA brass and 32 to 40 Vmax please let me know. I’m leaning toward using 32 gr but won’t know until I test. I’ve seen the reamer print that “Evan” listed awhile back and it is similar at the 0.200 line and has 0.402 freebore.

That one looks good. What dies are you planning on using? The Hornady FL off the shelf die will size the base a little too much as, I assume, it was set up for the original Vartarg that had a smaller 0.375 dimension to compensate for the undersized Remington 221 Fireball brass of the day.

I have a redding full length bushing die. I will more than likely only use it for the initial sizing and then once I have some 1x or 2x fired brass I’ll send to Whidden to have a custom FL sizer made.

JGS did mine, I went with .232 neck because I wanted to turn them, and .015 freebore. Couldn't be happier, have never looked back.

Zero freebore and 235 nk if you dont wanna turn.
Loaded bullets with Lapua brass will run around .2315 give or take .0005

I DO KNOW that with a ZERO freebore, no issues chasing the lands.
But I'll add, I single feed and load .010 into the lands.
Have stuck a few bullets pulling a live round but knew ahead of time what top expect.

Why are so many about the zero freebore, what's a little bit of freebore hurt? It's not like these things a hard on throat erosion and you're loading your own ammo, not shooting factory, so you can seat the bullet wherever you want/need to make it shoot best for you.

Some of my guns have a little freebore and others have a lot more but I don't have a single gun with a zero freebore throat and they all shoot very well.

Good read. I spoke with Warren years ago. He has not been active on the forums of late. He shared his reamer print with me. I’ll see if I can post it. May be a 20 Practical, but for what you’re focused on, it doesn’t matter…
